Military Mother Praises Faith and Family, Encourages Moms
By Movieguide® Contributor
Victoria Riollano is a military mother of seven and the author of her new book Warrior Mother.
Riollano sat down with The 700 Club to talk through “how to navigate the uncertain waters of raising children of faith while fueling her own spiritual gas tank.”
“Something God showed me is that we make a plan for everything,” Riollano stated. “If we go to the grocery store, we have a plan. If we go on vacation, we have a plan. But when it comes to parenting, we just kind of stumble in and hope it works out and so one thing I try to do for each child is try to have a specific goal. Our family has a Bible verse that is like our verse, we have a mission statement, then I have non-negotiables. Our family things that we won’t do or won’t participate in so it’s all about praying and asking God for the strategy. And you really ask God for a scripture for the child.”
Riollano then discussed the importance of a mother and father being on the same page when it comes to parenting.
“I’ve been married for 17 years now and when we’re not together and on the same page the children pick that up. So, what do you do? Ultimately, I’ll let my husband have the final say for some things, but we’ll really try to talk about whatever the situation is that’s come up. We’ll talk about it and figure out what we’re gonna do, what’s the plan, and then we just kind of go from there,” she said.
“But for the kids, were a united front. If I said no, he said no and vice versa,” she added.
As for praying for her children, Riollano said that she really tries to pray strategic prayers specifically for each child.
“I’m praying for my children’s protection before they leave the house. I’m praying for who’s influencing them and what’s influencing them. I’m praying that God will give them discernment at all times,” Riollano expressed.
Movieguide® values mothers and their role in the family. Movies can provide a wonderful celebration of mothers.
Movieguide® previously reported on the top films to watch for Mother’s Day:
In past years, we’ve talked about how few movies there are that feature strong, loving mothers. Too often, motherhood is mocked in movies (BAD MOMS), or they’re simply portrayed as mean (MOANA in the beginning), or even as the villains (AMERICAN BEAUTY, SOUTH PARK and SERIAL MOM).
However, we’ve seen a growing trend of positive portrayals of mothers in Hollywood movies. CINDERELLA tells the story of a mother passing on her values to her daughter in a powerful way. HIDDEN FIGURES shows hard-working mothers dedicated to serving their country in NASA’s computer department, but also present for their children. ARRIVAL shows a skilled linguist who saves humanity deciding that being a mother is the greatest thing she can do. These are just a few terrific movies that didn’t even make the Top 10 List that promote the incredible role mothers play in our lives.
