Over two decades after his death, people around the world still celebrate the life and legacy of Mister Rogers.
“People were important to him,” the iconic children’s show host’s wife, Joanne Rogers, told PEOPLE in 2019. “He was to me and to the family who he is to everybody else.”
Fred Rogers hosted MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD for three decades. He passed away in February of 2003 after he was diagnosed with stomach cancer at the age of 74.
“He was the first and the last of his kind — there’s never going to be another like him,” longtime friend and CAPTAIN KANGAROO actor Bob Keeshan told the New York Post shortly after his death. “He was a wonderful, wonderful human being.”

The Fred Rogers Company, which produced MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD, continues to produce original children’s content “rooted in [Mister Rogers’] philosophy and approach” that are designed to “build on his legacy with millions of today’s children,” per a 2023 interview with the company’s president and CEO Paul Siefken with the Pittsburgh Union Progress.

Executive director of the Fred Rogers Institute Dana Winters told the outlet, “Even as grown-ups, the messages that everyone is loved and is capable of loving, that matters. It doesn’t matter where I go around the country or around the world. People are yearning to go back to that simple message and see that that simple message is still possible.”
Rogers also encouraged his viewers to carry on his legacy of kindness and compassion for others. In a video recorded shortly before his death, Rogers addressed adults who had watched his show when they were young.
“I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger. I like you just the way you are,” he said. “And what’s more, I’m so grateful to you for helping the children in your life to know that you’ll do everything you can to keep them safe…It’s such a good feeling to know that we’re lifelong friends.”
Decades after his death, Rogers is still inspiring people around the world to live out his message of kindness and love for others.
