MOANA 2 Wins Big at Box Office Second Weekend Running

MOANA 2 is breaking records at the box office!

The sequel to the popular Disney movie just hit the $600 million mark at the global box office, with $300 million coming just from the U.S.

“The amount set a record gross for a movie on the weekend following Thanksgiving weekend, unseating FROZEN II, which earned $35.2 million in the same time frame in 2019,” AP News noted.

These numbers have made MOANA 2 one of the biggest movies of 2024.

Deadline reported that it is now the “No. 5 movie of 2024 worldwide” and is “the No. 8 studio release of the year overseas.”

MOANA 2 “reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers,” according to Disney’s website. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

The movie sees Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprising their roles as Moana and Maui, respectively.

Cravalho, who was a young unknown when she was cast as the lead in MOANA, told PEOPLE the sequel is the chance to “look back at just how much growth I’ve gone through.”

She credits her parents with keeping her grounded and supporting her during that time, saying, “Your parents give you so much. Kids feel a little indebted, I’m going to be honest! But we feel so grateful for our parents’ sacrifices.”

MOANA 2 is part of a trio of movies, including GLADIATOR II and WICKED, that studios and theaters were banking on to revitalize box office numbers.

All three are bringing in millions in ticket sales, but MOANA 2 is the undisputed winner, topping the box office charts two weeks in a row.
