Netflix Adds New Children’s Animated Series SONIC PRIME, KUNG FU PANDA: THE DRAGON KNIGHT

By Movieguide® Staff

Netflix recently announced a number of upcoming animated children’s series, including SONIC PRIME, KUNG FU PANDA: THE DRAGON KNIGHT, and WE LOST OUR HUMAN.

Netflix’s John Derderian noted in a recent blog post that the new set of series are a part of Netflix’s efforts to create more family-friendly content.

“We want to create a safe and trusted space where your children can relax, play, learn, and explore alongside their favorite characters,” the post read. “This goes beyond our shows to our easy-to-use parental controls like pin protection and the kids activity recap to help caregivers make the right decisions for their families.”

“As a father to a four-year-old son and two-year-old daughter, I love seeing the world through my children’s eyes and sharing new experiences together,” the post continued. “Sometimes that means having a dance party or solving a puzzle. Sometimes it means curling up together to watch their favorite new show.”

Movieguide® previously nominated SONIC THE HEDGEHOG at the annual Movieguide® Awards Gala but has yet to review SONIC PRIME.

In the past, Netflix’s children’s content contained objectionable content. Movieguide® previously reported on MAYA AND THE THREE:

Just because it’s rated Y-7, as in for children seven years old and older, does not mean Netflix’s MAYA AND THE THREE is acceptable viewing for your family.

First and foremost, all of the characters practice polytheism, which is the belief in multiple gods.

There is also a plethora of violence in this show and death is referred to after every battle, of which there are multiple in every episode… In addition to violence, there is also the beliefs in folklore, magic, and witches. The Meca believe all too deeply in folklore and that such past stories control our present and future.

For these reasons, Movieguide® advises against anyone under the age of 13 watching MAYA AND THE THREE, and extreme caution for older teenagers and adults.

Movieguide® also reported on Netflix’s increased interest in children’s programming:

Co-CEO for Netflix, Reed Hastings, said that the streaming services champion wants to target family-friendly programming content to compete with and surpass their competition.

“We want to beat Disney in family animation,” Hastings said.

Although Netflix releases hundreds of titles on a global scale each year, Hastings aims to take control of the animated movie market he says is led by Disney.

Hastings confessed that it might be some time before Netflix defeats Disney in this avenue: “That’s going to take a while. I mean, they are really good at it.”

The possible installation of more moral content to Netflix could mean more viewership.

Movieguide previously reported: “Netflix’s top 10 list reveals that family-friendly movies are consistently the most “viral” products on the streaming site, according to a new point system developed by Travis Bean for Forbes.”

Despite the company’s insistence on creating shows and movies for mature audiences, many of which cross an adult’s threshold for immoral content, Netflix has the opportunity to add more God-honoring content, which will broaden their audience and increase revenue.
