NFL Star Christian McCaffrey Gives ‘Honor and Glory’ Back to God
By Movieguide® Contributor
Running back for the San Francisco 49ers, Christian McCaffrey gives God the glory after scoring a touchdown in 14 straight games—a new franchise record.
“My faith is very important to me, and that’s why I’m praying all the time,” McCaffrey said, per Church Leaders. “When you have a bunch of people chanting your name, it’s important that you give the honor and glory back to the person, God, that’s allowing me to do this.”
The running back is also very vocal about his faith on social media. He often includes Bible verses in his Instagram posts.
In a post from October 2, McCaffrey included Philippians 4:6, which reads, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done.”
In a 2022 interview with Queen City News, he shared more about his faith.
“When you have a ‘why,’ you can endure everything, and I think when your faith is strong, when you understand what’s going on in your life…you just turn to God and surrender,” McCaffrey stated. “For me, that was the biggest weight off my back was that word—just keep telling myself, ‘Surrender.’ You’re not in control as much as you think you are, and that’s a gift.”
McCaffrey isn’t the only believer on his team. Quarterback Brock Purdy also shares his faith, and Purdy shared how grateful he is to have McCaffrey as a teammate and brother in Christ.
“I didn’t know what to expect going into a professional locker room, who’s a believer, who’s not or any of that stuff,” Purdy told Sports Spectrum in an interview. “And I was very fortunate and blessed to have guys like Charlie Woerner, Christian McCaffrey, pastor Earl Smith, Oren Burks, these guys that are just solid believers. We’d meet before road games and just have our little Bible studies. But the biggest thing for me was, man, having fellowship. You’re in a crazy business, you’re on the road, you’re going to different places. But to have guys that believe in the Lord and can help you and pour into you with their experiences and everything, I found that huge.”
The 5-0 49ers will face a 2-2 Cleveland Browns this Sunday in week 6 of the regular season.
Movieguide® previously reported on Purdy:
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy returned to the field after elbow surgery to compete against the Pittsburgh Steelers in a week one game.
Before his return, Purdy spoke to SportsSpectrum to discuss his mindset throughout his recovery.
“I think the first thing really is just, obviously, being thankful for just the little things, the moments and being present with where God has me,” Purdy told Sports Spectrum. “Not trying to get caught up in timelines of what my future looks like and ‘Oh, I did this last year, so I deserve this.’”
“For me it’s, ‘No, God has me where He needs me,’ and, ‘How can I look around and be thankful for where He has me and just have that steadfastness and peace and love, obviously that He provides, and stay in that?’” he added.
