New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson wants everyone to understand that “Jesus came to set us free.”
“How can we proclaim the name of Christ as our Lord and Savior, yet continue to live like the world and still live in bondage to sin?” Henderson began a post on social media.

He then referenced Romans 2:4, which reads, “Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?”
Henderson isn’t saying that people have to be perfect. He’s saying that once we accept Jesus as our Savior, there is a spiritual shift that takes place in the heart of a person, making sin something they no longer desire.
“I’m not preaching perfection. But Jesus didn’t die and suffer for us to stay the same. He came to make us clean, to make us new, to set us free and to fill us with His Holy Spirit so that we can be transformed and made more like Him,” Henderson said. “If we genuinely believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and we’re saved by grace through faith alone, then it should lead to transformation and good works by the power of the Holy Spirit. God’s grace doesn’t keep us the same, but it changes those who receive it.”
“We must take up our cross, deny ourselves and follow Jesus. He didn’t call us to blend in but to stand out!” the running back emphasized.
Henderson concluded his message with 1 Peter 1:14-16, which says, “So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, ‘You must be holy because I am holy.’”
Henderson isn’t speaking to nonbelievers in his post, but to Christ followers. The reality is that at the end of our lives, we are going to hear the words “Well done my good and faithful servant,” or we are going to hear, “Depart from me, for I never knew you.” If we knowingly live our lives in sin, we will hear the latter. But if we seek Jesus, turn away from sin and live for Christ, not perfection, we will enter the kingdom of heaven.
