Prayer Got This Country Star’s Marriage Through Hard Times
By Movieguide® Contributor
Country star Thomas Rhett says the power of prayer got him and wife Lauren through rough spots in their marriage.
“We were becoming famous at arguably the hardest moment in our personal lives,” Rhett told Us Weekly.
The couple were working to adopt daughter Willa Gray from Uganda while also trying to get pregnant. At the same time, Rhett’s career was taking off, requiring him to travel constantly.
“Traveling back and forth was so challenging,” he said. “I’d go to Uganda and be husband and dad, and then go to America and be like, ‘OK, shows and music.’ I was internally imploding, and so was Lauren. We’d both come to these breaking points [feeling like] something has to give. It was not a fun time in our marriage.”
Despite the hardships, Rhett said for him and his wife, “Giving up was not an option.”
“Prayer got us through,” he said. “With me being a fixer and Lauren being stubborn, we made it work. The easiest thing to do is quit. But when you don’t and you keep grinding it out, you’ll inevitably become stronger.”
Rhett’s marriage inspired his latest album, About a Woman, telling Billboard, “The vision for this album was just joy.”
He joked that he’s had to stop playing demos he’s unsure about for Lauren because “she would sometimes get attached to [a song] that I wasn’t attached to — so it became this awkward conversation when it came time to record. She’s like ‘Oh, are you putting that on there?’ and I’m like ‘No,’ and she’s like ‘Why?’”
“I’ve even kind of quit playing demos because she’ll get attached to the demo [version] of a song. So, on this record, I might’ve played her a couple of demos but for the most part, I’ll play her rough cuts in the studio first,” he continued.
Rhett and Lauren share four daughters, Willa Gray, 8, Ada James, 6, Lennon Love, 4, and Lillie Carolina, 2. The country singer has shared that the couple have thought about having another child.
“My wife has wanted five kids for forever,” he told People. “So I’m sure we’re gonna have at least that many. I would love a son. But at the same time, I’m so used to embracing this ‘girl dad’ life that I don’t really know what I would do with a boy, to be honest with you!”
