Prince William shared about a “very tough” few years, including his wife, Kate, the Princess of Wales’, and his father, King Charles III’s, cancer diagnoses.

“We choose to communicate a lot more with our children…sometimes, you feel like you’re oversharing with your children and like you probably shouldn’t, but most of the time, hiding stuff from them doesn’t work,” the father of three told Brazilian journalist Luciano Huck recently.

Buckingham Palace announced in February 2024 that Charles has cancer but did not disclose the type or stage. The Palace said he was receiving ongoing medical treatment.

A month later, Kate revealed her cancer publicly. In January, she announced she was in remission.

“But it is always a balancing act — every parent knows that,” William continued. “It’s, ‘How much do I say? What do I say? When do I say?’ And there’s no manual for being a parent, you’ve just got to go with it — a bit of instinct.”

He adds that their decision not to have their kids have phones has been “tense.”

“We communicate why we don’t think it’s right. And again, I think it’s the internet access I have a problem with,” William said.

He revealed the rule in an interview last month.

“So, sit and chat is really important,” the prince said at the time. “None of our children have any phones, which we’re very strict about.”

“I think children can access too much stuff they don’t need to see online,” he told Huck. “So, having a phone and text message, the old sort of brick phone as they call them, I think that’s fine.”

He says they try to be normal, involved parents as much as they can.

“Play dates, taxi driver, sports days, matches, playing in the garden when I can,” William said. “School run, most days. I mean, Catherine and I share it, but she probably does the bulk of it.”

Kate said in 2018, “Spending quality time is such an important aspect of family life and for me, as a mother, it is the simple family moments together like playing outside together that I cherish.”

They prioritize talking together and have said they want their children to be able to talk about their feelings.

“I think it’s really important that that atmosphere is created at home. You have to have that warmth, that feeling of safety, security, love,” William said in the Apple TV series, THE RELUCTANT TRAVELER last month.

William and Kate’s goal is simple — keep their family close and connected through whatever comes their way.
