Rebecca St. James Reflects on the ‘Power of God’ in Her Life

By Movieguide® Contributor

Rebecca St. James believes in miracles.

The singer shared how she experienced them personally in an interview with CBN News. Her family’s story was recently depicted in the movie UNSUNG HERO.

“For me watching it I think what I see is just the power of God. I see what he did in our story in that time,” St. James said. “I see a family of eight, you know, with a baby on the way, that had nothing. We had no furniture in our house, who were sleeping on the floor on beds literally made out of clothes with sheets tucked around it for a little while. No car, no income. And we prayed as a family and we saw God show up.”

The singer explained how God met their needs through miracles.

“We saw groceries on our doorstep and, you know, truckloads of furniture dropped at our house, and checks come in the mail, and just miracles. So, I think it’s profoundly personal for me, that story, because it gave me a testimony.”

St. James can’t deny the power that is in prayer.

“I’ve seen the power of God in prayer,” she said. “And I’ve seen God change my life and my family’s life.”

“The film pays homage to the incredible ways God worked in her family’s life after her parents, David and Helen Smallbone, brought their family from Australia to America after losing everything, worked hard cleaning homes and doing yard work, and eventually landed record deals for Rebecca and her brothers, Joel and Luke (For KING & COUNTRY),” Faithwire summarized.

Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:

UNSUNG HERO is a powerful, compelling story of faith and family, told with lots of sincerity and heart. The acting and writing is very good and convincing. UNSUNG HERO has a strong Christian, biblical worldview. The family’s Christian faith is not only clear from their repeated prayers to Jesus to guide and provide for them, but also from their infectious enthusiasm and spiritually uplifting song lyrics.

The movie was a hit with fans, too, earning over $20 million domestically.

Movieguide® previously reported on Luke and Joel Smallbone’s perspective on their story:

For KING & COUNTRY stars Joel and Luke Smallbone point to the “power of family” as the most important theme of their recent movie UNSUNG HERO.

“Luke and I were very young when we moved, but we did see miracles,” Joel explained. “To us, it was sort of this great adventure, and so that’s what we’ve really aimed to depict in this film.”

Luke added, “We struggled as a family coming here, and our faith journey kind of starts there…”

The brothers emphasized that the movie is all about uplifting their family members and hope that audiences will come away from UNSUNG HERO with a newfound appreciation for their own families.
