SHREK 5 Gets 2026 Release Date

New details have been announced for the next SHREK movie.
SHREK 5 is set to hit theaters July 1, 2026. Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all expected to return.
Variety reported, “Antonio Banderas’ return as the feisty feline Puss in Boots is not yet confirmed. SHREK 5 will be directed by Walt Dohrn, who served as a writer and artist on SHREK 2 and SHREK THE THIRD, and as head of story on SHREK FOREVER AFTER, in which he also voiced Rumpelstiltskin. SHREK 5 will be produced by franchise returner Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri; Brad Ableson serves as co-director.”
Eddie Murphy who plays Donkey revealed the new project last month, as reported by Movieguide®.
SHREK 5 is currently in the works. Eddie Murphy, who plays Donkey, confirmed details of the film in a recent interview with Collider.
“We started doing SHREK 4 or [SHREK] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” he said. “SHREK is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a SHREK, and we’re doing a DONKEY [movie].”
SHREK first debuted 23 years ago in 2001. CEO of Illumination Studios Chris Meledandri believes credits the franchise’s long-running success is its vocal talent.
“When you look back on those vocal performances, they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations,” he explained.
The return of the beloved actors comes as no surprise. Meledandri previously said, “We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.”
SHREK FOREVER AFTER, the last SHREK movie to come out, earned a +2 content rating from Movieguide®, thanks to its “Very strong Christian, biblical, moral worldview.” Part of the review reads:
