SHREK Movies Top Netflix Charts as Fifth Installment Gets 2026 Release

By Movieguide® Contributor

Fans are prepping for SHREK 5 by revisiting the franchises’ earlier installments, launching them to the top of Netflix’s charts.

Currently, the original SHREK movie holds the No. 3 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies Global list. SHREK 2 sits at No. 4, while SHREK THE THIRD, which Collider says wasn’t as well received as its predecessors, is No. 9.

It isn’t surprising that fans keep coming back to the franchise. Movieguide® has nominated all the SHREK movies for Teddy Bear Awards®, thanks to their uplifting storylines.

SHREK is thoroughly enjoyable on nearly every level. The script is very funny, although it crosses the line in good taste a little bit a couple times or so. Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy as a talkative donkey make a delightful comic team. John Lithgow as the evil king, and Cameron Diaz as the princess add a lot to this mix. In fact, the story of SHREK turns out to be quite a sweet, heartwarming morality tale about learning to love and be loved and looking beyond outward appearances to the inner beauty inside. The animation in SHREK is also superb. Not even a few PG elements can spoil all the fun.

Dreamworks wants to take advantage of the movies’ enduring popularity, and SHREK 5 will be coming to theaters Dec. 23, 2026.

Production kicked off last summer, and stars Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all expected to return for the flick, though Antonio Banderas’ Puss in Boots hasn’t been confirmed.

“I’m not so far, and I’m not being called for that,” Banderas told Parade when asked if he would appear in the movie. “PUSS IN BOOTS did very well. Number two got a nomination for the Oscar, and the movie behaved beautifully at the box office. But I am totally satisfied with the five Puss in Boots that I did. I don’t know what is going to happen in the future. Maybe they [will] call me tomorrow.”

Walt Dohrn, who worked on SHREK 2 and SHREK THE THIRD, will return to direct along with Conrad Vernon, who directed SHREK 2 and voiced Gingerbread Man. Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri will produce.
