Sight & Sound Films wants to bring Americans back to the country’s faith roots with A GREAT AWAKENING to honor and celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary.

“What this film really depicts is the biblical definition of liberty,” Sight & Sound CEO Joshua Enck told The Christian Post.

A GREAT AWAKENING tells “the true story of an unlikely friendship that resulted in one of the most defining moments in American history.” The friends? Eighteenth-century evangelist George Whitefield and founding father Benjamin Franklin.

The movie will star John Paul Sneed and Jonathan Blair and will be released in theaters on Easter, April 3.

That time in history was “one of the most formative moments in American history, uniting generations around the belief that true liberty is found only in Jesus Christ. This story is more than history. It’s a reminder that God can change the world through the work of willing hearts—and we believe He will do it again,” the Sight & Sound website reads.

“This story really found us,” Enck revealed. “It’s not that I had aspirations as a young child to do a film on George Whitefield. But when I started diving into the 250th anniversary and the concept of liberty, I found this incredible friendship.”

“They were a team,” the CEO continued. “Franklin was the greatest promoter of the greatest event in American history. There were many preachers leading up to 1776, but there were none like Whitefield, and when you combined the power of his voice with Franklin’s ability to get the word out, it unified the colonies.”

Getting the chance to explain the biblical definition of liberty attracted Enck to the project.

“On the Liberty Bell, it says, ‘Proclaim liberty throughout all the land and to all the inhabitants thereof.’ I want that liberty to ring out over this nation once again in the hearts of men and women,” Enck said.

“The biblical definition of liberty,” he added, “is that blood was already shed for us, freedom from sin so that we can serve the Lord freely. This film doesn’t shy away from the Gospel. We don’t soft-shoe anything.”

The film focuses on Franklin and Whitefield’s need for a savior.

“We show the flaws of Ben Franklin. We show the flaws of George Whitefield,” Enck explained. “God uses imperfect leaders to transform the world. That’s what happened in the Great Awakening.”

“We need something that brings us back together as a nation,” he added. “This film doesn’t have a political agenda. We’re not trying to prove whether every founding father was a Christian. We’re simply telling how this powerful friendship ignited an awakening.”

Sight & & Sound’s A GREAT AWAKENING will remind our nation of our need for God.
