Singer Alicia Witt Credits Prayer for Sobriety, Cancer Battle

Hallmark actress and singer Alicia Witt opened up about her sobriety journey in her recent EP “Witness.”

Witt’s sobriety journey began after receiving a cancer diagnosis.

In November 2021, she was going to have drinks with a friend.

“I had a bottle of whiskey because I knew somebody who was going to be there who loves fine whiskey and I loved whiskey, and I also had a bottle of wine,” she told PEOPLE.

“I was looking forward to having drinks like I always did. I got the call as I was leaving to go to the party, that to my doctor’s shock, the biopsy that I had done showed that I had breast cancer,” she continued.

With that shocking diagnosis, Witt canceled on her friend and started researching treatment options. She learned that frequent drinking has been linked to breast cancer. Not wanting to make her condition worse or open the door for a relapse, she committed to sobriety.

“I was already a very healthy person by most measures, I’d say, so I had to look at what I was doing that maybe exacerbated this situation,” she explained. “I learned just how much of a risk drinking was, and not only that but after you’ve got that all clear, you’ve got to change. You can’t go back to everything you were doing before.”

Witt credits her friends, prayer and God for her recovery.

“I genuinely can’t imagine how different the experience would’ve been without a handful of incredibly close friends,” Witt said. “They were there every step of the way with me. I found myself praying more than I ever have, and I’ve always felt a close connection to God, and that connection – that faith – has deepened exponentially.”

Her EP reflects how important those friends were during that time.

“I knew that I wanted to create a collection with the name ‘Witness,’” Witt told PEOPLE. “It describes so vividly to my own heart what I was experiencing at the toughest of times I’ve gone through, and the very tine group of inner circle friends who were right by my side through the thick of it…who are my witnesses.”

Witt’s alum released last week.

“Beyond grateful to all those who worked with me on this music—and my inner inner inner circle of friends/Witnesses, who know who they are – whether they’re on social media or not,” she shared on Instagram.

CNN reported that the EP allowed Witt to “memorialize the ‘complex’ emotions she experienced during that time.”
