Professional skateboarder Ryan Sheckler knows the gospel can change any life.
“I just wanted to take a moment to be bold,” Sheckler began a recent Instagram video. “You know, a lot of you guys know my story, you know where I’ve been, what I’ve been through, and what changed everything was my belief and faith in Jesus Christ, and that’s all I had to have was a little bit of faith and believe that He died on the cross and He rose three days later for my sin. And I truly believe that.”
“I got to a point in my life where this sin was overwhelming, the addiction was overwhelming. Life itself was overwhelming,” he continued. “When I was at my lowest, I invited Jesus Christ into my life, and he opened up my heart. He came in and he changed my life. I don’t know who out there needs to hear that, but for me, it was that simple.”

Sheckler joined the “Jesus Calling” podcast in 2020 and talked about the destruction of addiction.
“When I checked into rehab, my mom, picked me up from the airport, which was a really traumatic and scary experience,” he said on the podcast. “But it was the best experience of my life, you know, watching my mom turn around and leave me at this place that was supposed to help me. And watching her turn out of the gate gives me the chills. You know, it makes me want to cry because I was so gnarly, but that was it.”
“The second she turned her car out, I was a wreck,” he recalled. “I had absolutely hit a wall and decided that I needed to fix something, because I had started to lose my passion for skateboarding. I’ve been skateboarding since I was two years old. And all of a sudden, this alcohol is going to take me away from the biggest passion of my life. No, it wasn’t acceptable to me.”
If you, like Sheckler, recognize that you can’t save yourself from your sins, the answer is simple.
“I said a simple prayer that went like this: ‘Jesus Christ, I need you, and I accept you, and I believe that you died on the cross for my sins, Lord, please use my life. Show me what you want me to do. Let me get out of my will and let me live in your will,'” Sheckler told his 2.1 million Instagram followers.
“And that was about six years ago, and my life has drastically changed, and he could do the same for you,” he declared. “So I don’t know who needs to hear that today, but if you’re struggling, if you’re stressing, and you’ve tried everything, I highly suggest you invite Jesus Christ into your life and see what happens.”
He reminded his followers of Luke 12:8-9, which reads, “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God.”
Through his relationship with Christ, Sheckler has become bold in his faith, wanting others to experience the same healing and freedom through Jesus that he did.
