THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE certainly built on the momentum created by the franchise’s first movie, securing the best opening weekend for a sequel in years.
“Mario and Luigi, the twin plumbers, apply their ‘let’s-a-go’ attitude to solve everyday problems all over their new home of the Mushroom Kingdom,” a synopsis of the movie reads. “As they support Princess Peach, and work to reform a miniaturised imprisoned Bowser, they meet a new companion – Yoshi. Princess Peach’s birthday party sparks a galactic adventure, sending the brothers into space to stop Bowser Jr.’s wicked ambitions and save Rosalina. The addition of the beloved characters Rosalina and Bowser Jr. adds extra spice of big action, comedy, and some shocking revelations to the adventure!”

This premise is a hit with audiences as the movie enjoyed the largest opening weekend so far this year with a domestic haul of $130.9 million and a worldwide gross of $372.5.
“These kind of audience reaction scores just point to a ridiculously strong run, not only throughout the spring, but likely into the summer as well,” said Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution.
Movieguide® gave the movie a strong rating, noting its family-friendly plot and storyline that is enjoyable for Nintendo fans of all ages. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE is a funny, eye-popping series of rousing set pieces. It has an amazing variety of colorful, fantastic sets and characters. There’s some intense action violence, scary moments and scary creatures, however. THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE has a strong moral worldview with some redemptive content. It stresses good overcoming evil, helping others and doing the right thing. The movie also promotes strong bonds between sisters and brothers. Finally, Luigi and eventually Mario express love for their enemies. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger and older pre-teenage children because of the intense action violence and scary parts in THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE.
The success of THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE bodes well for Nintendo fans as the company has multiple other movies in production and teased the potential for a rapid expansion. The next movie coming from Nintendo will feature a live action look at the Zelda franchise.
“This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films,” executive Shigeru Miyamoto wrote on Nintendo’s official X profile in November 2023. “I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have not officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until it’s completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
It is encouraging to see Nintendo continue to find success with its family-friendly movies. THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE seems well on its way to enjoying the same success as the first movie in the franchise.
