Podcaster and author Tara-Leigh Cobble recently explained why her “familiarity” with the Bible was what initially made her resistant to reading it.

“I was meeting with my pastor weekly,” she said during an appearance on the “Net Positive Podcast” hosted by comedian John Crist. “And I actually probably needed help daily.”

Cobble explained, “When he challenged me to read the Bible and I didn’t want to, [I thought], ‘I feel like I got the main parts.’ I feel like my familiarity was keeping me from intimacy.”

This is what led Cobble to go on to create her wildly popular “Bible Recap” podcast, as well as encourage others to take the same journey she did.

In an interview with Relevant Magazine, she shared, “I grew up in the church, and I was so used to reading the Bible looking for myself: ‘What’s my takeaway? What’s my to-do list? How can I be a good Christian so that God gives me what I want?’ It was transactional.”

However, after being challenged to look for God in scripture, Cobble said “that subtle shift absolutely changed my life.”

The “Bible Recap”’s popularity showed her that “people want to read the Bible.”

“There is a hunger and desire to know God,” Cobble explained. “That says less about us as a podcast and more about the hearts of people out there.”

Cobble recently brought her podcast’s mission to the page with The Bible Recap 365-Day Chronological Study Bible.

“By fixing our eyes on God, we aren’t burdened with having to immediately and thoroughly understand every doctrinal nuance,” she told Publisher’s Weekly of why she wanted to write the book. “Instead, we’re buoyed by His character and carried along by knowing God more every day.”

Cobble continued, “For years, TBR followers have been asking for a book that contains both the Bible and ‘The Bible Recap,’ and they’ve especially wanted it to be laid out in the order of our chronological reading plan.”

“We’ve created a resource that makes it easier than ever for people to read, understand, and love the Bible — and the God who wrote it! He’s where the joy is!” she continued. “It’s so encouraging to see how so many people want to read the Bible.”

Cobble’s decision to put aside her familiarity and read the Bible with fresh eyes has led her to a deeper connection with God — and given her a mission to help others find that same connection.
