THE MANDALORIAN to Begin Filming Season 4 in Early 2024

After being delayed by the writers’ and actors’ strikes earlier this year, filming for THE MANDALORIAN Season 4 is set to begin next February.
Initially, the show was set to begin production in September. However, the dual strikes delayed the show indefinitely. Multiple sources have now confirmed that Lucasfilm is currently working on preproduction for the show as it looks to begin filming after the holiday season.
If Season 4 follows the same timeline as Season 3, the series’ latest installment will likely hit Disney+ by Summer 2025. The cast spent six months filming for Season 3 – meaning Season 4 would wrap in August – and the season spent a full year in post-production before it was released.
While it seems obvious that Disney would continue to produce its most popular series, there was some debate about whether the series would see a fourth season or if it would be turned into a movie. The movie option was being heavily considered during the strikes as it was unclear how long the delay in production would last. However, multiple inside sources have since confirmed that the next chapter of THE MANDALORIAN will return as Season 4 of the show.
Though Star Wars fans will have to wait roughly 18 more months until they can return to Mandalore, they will have no shortage of Star Wars content in 2024. Disney currently has plans to release four new series in the upcoming year: the animated THE BAD BATCH Season 3 and TALES OF THE JEDI Season 2 and the live-action THE ACOLYTE and SKELETON CREW. Lucasfilm has not revealed a specific release date for any of these series.
Looking further ahead, Disney also has plans for Season 2 of ANDOR to release in 2025. Murmurs of a new mainline Star Wars movie led by Daisy Ridley could eye a 2025 release as well.
Despite the abundance of Star Wars content currently in the works, Disney has recently stated that it plans to slow down production on the franchise as it refocuses on quality over quantity.

Disney has had a terrible year, with few wins to offset its many misses, and CEO Bob Iger looks to address this and explain how things will be different in the future.
“I looked at our overall output, meaning the studio, it’s clear that the pandemic created a lot of challenges creatively for everybody, including us,” Iger said. “In addition, at the time the pandemic hit, we were leaning into a huge increase in how much we were making and I’ve always felt that quantity can be actually negative when it comes to quality. And I think that’s exactly what happened. We lost some focus.”
Since the launch of Disney+, quantity has been an issue that has plagued some of Disney’s most prized franchises. It has relied on Star Wars and Marvel content to bring in subscribers, creating an overflow that has overwhelmed all but the most die-hard fans.
In creating the large quantity, Disney has also allowed the quality to slip, further eroding the number of people willing to watch the content. This distrust has bled into other Disney franchises as well, and viewers desire fresh IPs rather than rehashed stale ones.
