THE ROOKIE creator Alex Hawley recently teased success for its new spinoff, NORTH, and shared a bit about THE ROOKIE’s final episodes in Season 8.
“I would say yes, there might be a cliffhanger at the end, potentially,” he said of THE ROOKIE Season 8’s finale. There are just three episodes left in the series, which will end in mid-May.
“Next up is our true crime, mockumentary episode that we do every season” he told Deadline. “They’re a little polarizing.”
The whole cast and crew enjoys the mockumentary episodes.
“They came out of, how do we do episodes that are safer for the crew,” he said. “They’re always a lot of fun for us, they can be a little goofy but we enjoy them.”

The last episode, which came out on April 13, “Survive the Streets,” showcased a big theme with Monica and the task force.
“Also, some story that we set up early in the season comes back towards the end,” Hawley added.
THE ROOKIE: NORTH, which stars Jay Ellis, filmed in late February. The pilot has been completed.
“The pilot came out great,” Hawley said. “The network seems super happy with it. You never know until you know but we have a really amazing cast, led by Jay Ellis who’s a star; it was a joy to make that with him and the rest of them. You know me, I’m just an optimistic person in general, so I’m hopeful and optimistic that we could be talking about that in the near future.”
The show focuses on Alex Holland, a mid-lifer whose passion ignites after he experiences a home invasion. The show is set in the Pacific Northwest and was filmed in Vancouver.
“Most patrol shows you’ve ever seen are just big-city shows. They’re in Boston, they’re in LA, they’re in Chicago,” he explained in another interview. “I’ve never really seen a cop show take place in the parts of America that most people live in, which is a little bit urban, but also the exurbs in the suburbs, and even the rural areas.”
The setting “really does feel different than LA, it really does change the dynamic of the show, even though the setup is the same, patrol officers running around,” he added.
Hawley believes he can handle two shows at once.
“I have done it before; there was a period where I was doing ROOKIE and FEDS and THE RECRUIT at the same time,” he said. “It’s a lot but I have a really good team; they really helped me get there from here. So, yeah, I’m hopeful.”
Unlike the spinoff THE ROOKIE: FEDS, THE ROOKIE: NORTH is a standalone series. It will not be introduced in connection with THE ROOKIE, Blex Media reported.
If the show is cleared for takeoff, it could come out this fall or early next year.
