THE ROOKIE earned some new fans after being added to Netflix; the police procedural is shooting up the streamers’ Top 10 charts around the world.
“[THE ROOKIE is] currently climbing up the Top 10 chart in more than 20 countries,” Collider reported, listing Egypt, Kenya, Panama, Nigeria, South Africa and Venezuela as places where the show is enjoying major success.
THE ROOKIE is plenty popular in the US, too. It was recently renewed for its eighth season and is expected to start airing January 2026. Movieguide® praised the show’s strong moral worldview. The review for Season 6, episode 1 reads:
THE ROOKIE is an intense and compelling show, and the opening to Season 6 does not shy away from large action set pieces. The series maintains its positive outlook on law enforcement and John’s insistence on protecting and serving his community, even at the risk of his own life. There is no foul language or objectionable sexual content. However, the crime scenes and intense shootouts between the police and the criminals are graphic and bloody, especially for a TV-14 series. Despite these elements, this episode is still a largely moral and positive display of the first responder’s sacrifice and hard work.
Showrunner Alexi Hawley spoke to TV Insider about what fans can expect from Season 8 of THE ROOKIE, teasing a potential renewed relationship between characters Tim and Lucy.
“I mean that’ll be the question rolling into Season 8,” Hawley said. “So you’re asking the right questions, that is the question that we’re talking about in the room going into Season 8. But that being said, I do think that we’ve put those characters through a lot on their journey back, and I think we’re almost there.”
THE ROOKIE stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, an officer with the LAPD. In a recent appearance on GOOD MORNING AMERICA, he called it “probably the best job I’ve ever had,” adding, “I’m having a lot of fun.”
Fillion will return for Season 8, but right now, he has his hands full promoting his latest project, SUPERMAN. Fillion plays Guy Gardner, one of the Green Lanterns that patrol the earth. However, that doesn’t make his character a hero.
“I love the idea that if you have an emergency and you need a Green Lantern — there’s thousands of them out there in the galaxy — this is the last one you want,” Fillion joked in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
The actor continued, “What is very true about Guy Gardner…is you don’t have to be good and pure of heart to be a Green Lantern. You just have to be fearless. You just have to have the will. And Guy Gardner thinks he can take on Superman. That’s how fearless he is. No, you can’t take on Superman, dude.”
Fillion will reprise the role in the upcoming HBO series LANTERNS, which will tell the story of the Green Lanterns in more detail.
“It’s neat to see him in different environments and how those different environments will affect a character,” he shared.
From pulling in live viewers to finding new fans on streaming around the world, it looks like THE ROOKIE is an international sensation!
