THE LIFE OF CHUCK’s stars Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Karen Gillan and director Mike Flanagan spoke with Movieguide® about movie’s incredible message.
“It will make you reflect on the meaning in your life,” Hiddleston told Movieguide® this week.
For Hiddleston, living life to the fullest means doing the best you can, holding on to the people you love and dedicating “yourself to people and ideas that will outlast you.”
“Live with joy, live with love, live with courage,” he added. “It’s not easy. But it’s a practice and the more you practice the easier it gets.”
Hiddleston told Reuters he loved the “idea of holding onto the people you love and the people who matter, because you never know when it’ll all end, and to have the courage to live as fully as you can with what you have.”
The movie is about the “ordinary” life of a man named Charles Krantz. It emphasizes that while life may be brief and complex, it’s certainly remarkable.
Director, writer and producer Mike Flanagan said he was drawn to the script because it was wholly “uncynical.”
It “celebrated the joy in the little moments of life and our connections to each other while not shying away from our mortality. From the loss of a world and of a universe that we’re all going to go through one at a time individually at some point. All of that was there,” Flanagan said.
Hiddleston said, “When I first read it…I was very moved by it and I found it so sincere, and that sincerity I was incredibly drawn to because it took seriously that the idea that our lives really matter to us and to the people we love, and that every ordinary life, however seemingly ordinary on the surface, is magic. And yes, life is hard and can be full of loss and suffering and struggle and grief, but it’s also full of joy and it’s full of love and it’s full of connection.”

He loves the acknowledgement that the last hours of one’s life are filled with reflection of the love and joy they experienced.
Actress Karen Gillan felt drawn to the script because it got her asking herself if she was using her life wisely.
“Am I doing it the way that I, you know, in a way that I could look back on my life and be proud of what I did? And I thought that was a really interesting experience,” she told Movieguide®. “I wanted to be a part of something that might spark that conversation in other people.”
Chiwetel Ejiofor said, “I think it was the kind of tonality of the film, you know, just its existential questions, its emotion, and I just thought it was really compelling, you know, just in a on a kind of purely entertainment level, you know, I was just really compelled by the mystery within it and the kind of investigation of the apocalypse or the end of the world and just with that knowledge that something else was going on entirely.”
THE LIFE OF CHUCK is available in theaters starting June 6.
