Tony Hale is “very, very grateful” to get his latest movie, SKETCH, into theaters after an eight-year journey.

“We started this movie eight years ago,” he told Relevant Magazine. “It wasn’t until about six years into it that we finally found financing and had the vision for where it should be. Then we made the movie, went to Toronto, and we just so believed in this movie.”

Hale, who stars in the movie and serves as a producer, credited Angel Studios for SKETCH finally making it to the big screen.

“Honestly, the backing that Angel wanted to give us and get us into theaters — because we felt like this was a movie people needed to see in theaters — that’s not always the case,” he shared. “It’s this beautiful emotional grounding of a story mixed with this eye candy of a monster movie. I’m very, very grateful that they see where movies are meant to be.”

When asked what he hopes viewers take away from the movie, Hale said it’s all about the importance of “giving people permission to process feelings in their own way.”

“It’s about facing what’s in front of you,” Hale added. “Even if it’s terrifying. Especially if it’s terrifying.”

In an interview with The Christian Post, the actor discussed how his faith plays a role in the way he views the movie’s message.

“As a person of faith…[I believe that] ‘nothing grows on the mountaintop, but everything grows in the valley,’” Hale said. “It’s the hard times where you’re refined and go through stuff, and it’s not easy, but that tends to be where the growth is. God gave us these emotions to help us process these challenges.”

He also shared his hopes that families can watch SKETCH together.

“I just love kind of shared family viewing experiences,” Hale explained. “GOONIES was my shared family experience — fun, adventure, scary, but we could watch as a family. The parents enjoyed it. Kids enjoyed it.”

He added, “I want that same experience with this. I’d love for parents to watch and give themselves a break. We’re all on a learning curve, you know? We all make mistakes. And then kids can see it and be like, yeah, there’s a lot of different ways to process feelings.”

Hale elaborated on this hope in an interview with Southern Living, saying, “We describe it as INSIDE OUT meets JURASSIC PARK but a big goal for Seth [Worley, SKETCH’s writer and director] and I was just that kind of shared viewing with family…Me coming from a comedic background and him coming from a very visual effects background, turning a joke and finding the humor and the heart at the same time. It was just a big goal to have that shared viewing experience.”

Movieguide® called SKETCH “a funny and creative exploration of the way grief affects people differently, with a strong moral worldview stressing family and friendship.”

It might have taken eight years, but SKETCH is finally ready to entertain kids and parents alike!
