WHEN CALLS THE HEART Creator Promises No Love Triangles in Season 11

By Movieguide® Contributor

WHEN CALLS THE HEART co-creator and executive producer Brian Bird is giving fans a little explanation into that Season 10 cliffhanger.

Warning: spoilers ahead!

The tenth season of WHEN CALLS THE HEART ended with Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) calling off her engagement to Lucas (Chris McNally), which shocked many fans.

“None of our lives goes in a straight line,” Bird explained, adding that the writers’ plot twists don’t “always make everybody happy.”

He also pointed out that Elizabeth would never leave Hope Valley.

“Her whole life is here. Her whole world is here. And for Lucas, he’s always been bound for a bigger stage,” Bird said. “From the very first day he arrived in Hope Valley, you could tell this was a guy bound for something bigger in his life. So, if you’re following those two threads independently, this is where it went. And this is where it’s going.”

For any heartbroken WHEN CALLS THE HEART fans, Bird promised good things are coming.

“It took us five seasons to get Elizabeth and Jack (Daniel Lissing) married before Jack had to leave town,” Bird said. “This show has always been a slow burn and we feel like we have to stay true to all of that.”

In another interview, Bird made it clear that there will be no love triangles in the next season.

“We don’t want to go there,” he said. “You know, sometimes love triangles are things that are manufactured in storytelling.”

Bird explained that he dislikes when “people pick teams,” creating opposing sides that “sort of feed on each other.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Bird’s thoughts on WHEN CALLS THE HEART’s influence:

WHEN CALLS THE HEART co-creator Brian Bird recently discussed the impact the show has on viewers and why he’s not afraid to tell stories that don’t always make the audience feel good.

“We think that it’s a good force in the world that this show is here,” Bird said during an interview with the Daily Planet. “In a culture [and] a world with so few shows that do what this show does, it would be horrible not to have it.”

He continued, “I love what we’ve done with the show. I love what the show is. We’re not perfect, but I think we’re pretty good at it. It truly is a show that had to struggle to survive, and the origin story of this show [is] harrowing…it was never really supposed to be here, but it is. The fact that there is now this massive community of people that call themselves Hearties and ten seasons plus of the show — for me, it’s like a big miracle, and I don’t take that for granted.”

Season 11 of WHEN CALLS THE HEART will premiere April 7, and the stars of the show are just as excited as the fans are for the story to continue.

“Time has flown by since the end of season 10, and I cannot put into words how thrilled I am for the premiere of season 11 of WHEN CALLS THE HEART,” Krakow said in a statement about the upcoming season. “It’s such a warm feeling to know that we have the loyalty, love, and longevity to make it this far and that is a true testament to our viewers.”

She continued, “I’m beyond proud and grateful to our hardworking crew, writers, producers, cast, and Hallmark Channel for their vision and support. I cannot wait for viewers to tune in to this season and to continue on this journey with all of us! Season 11 delivers more heart than ever before!”
