Country music artist Cyndi Thomson surrendered her blossoming career to Jesus and found a kind of success greater than she ever could’ve imagined.

“I had written all the songs and obviously gotten the record deal at Capitol,” Thomson said in an episode of the “Jesus Calling” podcast. “For me, success first and foremost was that I actually was able to achieve a dream that I felt God had planted in my heart, which was to move to Nashville and get a record deal. What made it even better was that Capitol believed in my songs that I’d written and allowed me to be very much a part of the project.”

“You want your song to reach the top of the charts. You want to receive the accolades and awards because that, in a way, does signify that you were recognized for your hard work and your art,” she continued. “For me, those were kind of the things that mattered. I just knew that at that point, being on a label and having my songs on a record meant so much to me.”

Thomson skyrocketed to fame with her 2001 hit “What I Really Meant to Say” and debut album, My World. But deep inside, she was struggling to keep up appearances while following God’s leading. Ultimately, she surrendered her career and exited the industry after just one album.

“When I made the choice to leave the music industry, it wasn’t haphazard, it wasn’t overnight. It was a process that I really didn’t share with anyone,” Thomson explained. “It was like I had this big secret that I couldn’t tell anyone because I had reached my ultimate dream. I had successful music. I was being called the ‘it girl.’ I was having meetings with corporations about representing products.”

“There were so many things happening that you dream about, but deep down inside, I was having panic attacks. I was depressed. I was on antidepressants. I was having my heart monitored every week. I was in so much pain, and I didn’t understand why because what I was walking out was so beautiful,” the singer continued. “To the outside world, you look at that and you think,Wow, that’s amazing.’ And it was in so many ways, but I always say that fame is unnatural. It doesn’t mean that we can’t be famous or that God doesn’t put us in positions to represent Him or be a light to the world. But for me at that time, I just knew that if I didn’t walk away, I don’t know what would happen.”

As Thomson reflects on her career now, she can’t help but see God’s hand in her life.

“Looking back now, it was self-preservation, and it was obviously the Lord’s hand on my life,” she said. “So that decision came with much prayer. I remember having this moment where I was like, ‘Okay, Lord, if you really want me to do this, I need something supernatural from You only.’ I didn’t include other people in this decision because I didn’t want them to have the pressure of the yes or the no or me walking away or not walking away. It was a private conversation with me and the Lord. It was a private wrestle with me and Him because He had ultimately given me the dream.”

Now, over 20 years later, Thomson is a wife and mom of two, telling Wide Open Country that “I just decided to be a stay-at-home mom, which was one of my dreams, too. I just lived a very simple life.”

She has returned to the industry, though, releasing a new EP last year called Acres of Diamonds.

“I’ve always known I would sing again,” Thomson shared. “I just didn’t know what form it would take.”

But no matter what, she leans into listening to God’s leading.

“One of the most powerful truths I’ve learned is that God meets you in the quiet moments and speaks to your heart in ways you don’t expect,” she wrote on Instagram. “Sometimes He asks you to walk away from what you thought was everything, to trust Him fully, and to follow His voice, even when it doesn’t make sense. If you’ve ever felt pressure to perform, to chase a dream at all costs, or to define your worth by success, know this: in Christ, you are deeply known, deeply loved, and always worth it.”

It’s incredible to see how God continues to work in Thomson’s life.
