Why JoJo Siwa Is No Longer a Family-Friendly Role Model

By Movieguide® Staff

JoJo Siwa, who rose to child stardom through the show DANCE MOMS, has amassed a significant following through her seemingly child-friendly YouTube videos and social media accounts.

Unfortunately, Siwa is yet another example of why parents should be aware of what their children are learning and being told from their favorite media personality.

At the start of the year, Siwa, 17, announced she was now a part of the LGBTQ+ community to her millions of followers and loyal fanbase. Siwa recently encouraged people to explore their sexual orientation while presenting the award for Outstanding Children’s Programming at the 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards: “[You] can be in love with whoever you want to be in love with.”

“I recently just came out as a part of the LGBTQ community. I have the best, most amazing, wonderful girlfriend in the entire world who makes me so so so happy and that is all that matters,” Siwa said.

“I think it’s really cool now that kids all around the world who look up to me can now see that loving who you want to love is totally awesome. If you want to fall in love with a girl, if you want to fall in love with a boy, if you want to fall with somebody who is a they/them, or who is nonbinary, that is incredible. Love is awesome. You can be in love with whoever you want to be in love with, and it should be celebrated. And amazingly, now today in the world, it is.”

Although Siwa has a girlfriend, she had not come out as strictly lesbian or gay.

“I like queer. Technically, I would say that I am pansexual because that’s how I have always been my whole life is just like, my human is my human,” Siwa said in a recent interview. “I always believed that my person was just going to be my person. And if that person happened to be a boy, great, and if that person happened to be a girl, great!

“Right now, what matters is that you guys know that no matter who you love, that it’s OK. It’s awesome and the world is there for you,” she added. “There are so many people that are there for you. I know everyone’s situation is different and it might be harder for some people and it might be easier for some people to come out or be themselves. But I think coming out has this stigma around it — that it’s this really, really, really scary thing, but it’s not anymore. There are so many accepting and loving people out there that it’s OK.”

However, it is not just media personalities like Siwa who have a massive amount of power in training children in how to think about the world. Although worldviews contrary to the Bible are pervasive in adult media, publishers and programs target the impressionable minds of young children and teenagers.

“I love that there are so many amazing and inclusive shows for shorties on TV right now,” Siwa said. “GLAAD has been working closely with kid and family show creators and publishers, like “Little Bees Books” to help them shape the LGBTQ stories for tween and teen audiences. Now, even the littlest of kids can see what inclusion looks like, and so can their parents.”

While most of Siwa’s content may seem harmless to a young viewer, parents need to be aware and wary of the content that is easily accessible by their children.

Whether movies are redefining love as lust in rated-R movies or young social media influencers—who command the attention of young minds—compromise truth for the sake of inclusion, both have a severe effect on children.

To combat this, parents must teach their children a strong biblical/Christian worldview that allows the child to process information according to the Bible.

As Movieguide® Founder and Publisher Dr. Ted Baehr explains in his book, The Screen-Wise Family:

The Christian worldview provides us with different answers to our basic questions of life:

1. The Bible makes clear that God is ultimate reality. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).

2. Our basis for knowledge is God’s Revelation, but that Revelation is not illogical or irrational because logic is part of God’s essential nature. “In the past God spoke. . . through the prophets. . . but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (Heb. 1:1-2). (Note: If logic were not part of God’s

essential nature, then the words in this biblical verse would have no inherent meaning.)

3. We can know what is right and what is wrong from the Word of God. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16).

4. Man was created by God, but human nature is sinful. Because we have been created by God, in the image of God, there is some good even in the worst of us. However, because we are fallen, there is bad even in the best of us. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works” (Eph. 2:10).

5. After death, each one of us shall face eternal judgment. We will either enjoy God’s gracious rewards in Heaven or endure just punishment in Hell. “Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Heb. 9:27).

6. God is ruler over history. “The Most High is ruler over the kingdom of men and He gives it to anyone He wants” (Dan. 4:25).

7. Suffering and evil are a result of man’s rebellion against God since the Fall. “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” (Gal. 6:7).

8. The purpose of our existence is to glorify God and to worship Him forever. “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Cor. 10:31).

9. We should therefore live in obedience to the Bible. “The LORD your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul” (Deut. 26:16).

Through a strong Christian/biblical worldview, children learn that they must look to God for wisdom and guidance — not the celebrity d’jour.
