Lindsay Lohan recently shared how her past as a young star affects the way she raises her son today.
“I don’t ever want my family to experience being chased by the paparazzi the way I was. They were terrifying moments I had in my life — I have PTSD to the extreme from those things,” she told The Sunday Times. “The most invasive situations. Really scary. And I pray stuff like that never comes back. It’s not safe. It’s not fair.”
Lohan and her husband, Bader Shammas, are both committed to protecting their son, 2-year-old Luai, and largely keep him off of social media and obscuring his face in the photos they do post.
The actress said things are different now, as social media has taken away some of the power the paparazzi used to hold.
“It was way worse when I was younger, but now, because of social media, people can tell their own story in the way that you want it to be told. It has reclaimed the ownership of your life,” she said. “We didn’t have that. But what I have learned over time is how to separate my private life and public life, and that was difficult for me because nobody ever teaches you how to do that.”

This desire to keep her family out of the spotlight is why Lohan now lives in Dubai.
“It’s just far away from Hollywood, and I live a very normal life,” she said during an appearance on LIVE! WITH KELLY AND MARK. “There’s no worry of like, I can’t go eat at this place ‘cause someone’s gonna take a picture of my son. And it’s just…I feel very safe.”
She added that it is “not legal” to take photos of people when they’re out and about. Instead, “you have to ask the person, which is a big difference from here.”
Lohan has been open about balancing motherhood and her return to acting, telling the BBC, “When you become a mom, your whole life changes and it’s important to be able to balance work and being a mom which is definitely a learning process.”
She has also moved past her years as a troubled young starlet, explaining to CNN, “I’m at ease in my life because I’ve lived, I feel like, such a long life at such a young age. I feel wiser now and very settled. I’ve become such a positive person.”
Lohan might have stepped back into the spotlight with her recent starring role in FREAKIER FRIDAY, but the mom is dedicated to protecting her son from the public attention that she got as a child.
