Why NFL QB Derek Carr ‘Stands in the Gap’ for Christ

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr explained how he lets his faith direct his life.
“Trying to love everybody the way Christ teaches us to love. And I’m not going to back down from it,” the four-time Pro Bowler said in a video from Christhlete. “If culture is trying to put all the pressure on, and I’m the only one standing there, well, I’m going to stand in that gap.”
Carr referenced Ezekiel 22:30, which explains what it means to “stand in the gap.”
The verse reads:
“I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one.”
“I prayed this one day, and I was like, ‘Lord, if there is any gap you need me to stand in, I’ll stand in it.’ I want to be the one that stands there. I want to be the one that you see standing there praying for the church, praying for the pastors, taking the arrows so they don’t feel anything,” Carr explained. “Taking the bullets so my kids don’t have to feel it. You know, I want to be in that gap. I want to fill that void.”
“So, I just be free in who I am every day I wake up, just trying to be the most authentic, genuine person I can possibly be,” he concluded. “So, if someone sees me on the football field, I may be a little more intense, but it’s the same person they see hanging out with my kids.”
Movieguide® recently reported on Carr’s faith:
“I’ve seen teammates baptized in my hands. I’ve seen grown men cry in my hands and on my shoulder. I’ve seen all of these things,” he said in a video posted by Christhlete. “These guys have everything the world can offer them, and they sit there, and they weep to me because it’s not enough.”
“You can keep chasing your dream, you can keep chasing your job, the money, the fame, you can chase it all you want, but without the blood of Christ inside of you, it is all nothing,” he explained.
Carr referenced Mark 8:36-37, which reads, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”
