Why This Christian Actress Encourages Us to ‘Get to Know God’

Priscilla Shirer is encouraging us to get to know God’s “personality and His character” so that we can more clearly hear His voice.

“You do not know until hindsight that what you heard was the voice of God,” she said in a TBN video. “And the reality is, there is grace and mercy to cover our missteps. And that the Lord in His graciousness toward us, His knowledge of our frailty and our humanity for the willing heart who desires to do His will — even when we make mistakes — He allows them to become our greatest teachers for hearing Him correctly in the future. He does not hold it against us because we’ve misstepped along the way.”

Shirer continued, “The more you know Him, the more clearly you can hear Him. So the reason why we go to the Scriptures, the reason why we have quiet time, the reason why we fellowship with other believers who are going to help us remain encouraged in our faith, is because we’re just trying to get to know God.”

“When you see His personality and His character, then when you hear the voice of fear, [you know] ‘that [doesn’t] sound like my God,’” she said. “We can quickly pinpoint the voice of a stranger, because if we know God, the more clearly we can discern and divide His voice from a stranger.”

Shirer shared something similar with Liberty University students during a recent speech.

“When someone stood outside and knocked, they were doing so knowing it would take a lot of patience for the door to be answered, and they’d just stand,” she said. “This is the King of the universe ready to stand at your door. I want you to see and celebrate the patience of a Savior who is willing not just to save [us], but then to keep showing up at the door…and stand there and keep on knocking on our door. May it never be lost on us, may it never be casual to us, that a God like that would stand patiently waiting for us.”

Shirer concluded, “At some point, we as believers in Jesus Christ have to answer the knock at the door, fling it wide open, invite Him all the way in, and say to Him, ‘Everything is at Your full disposal — my mind to think Your thoughts, my hands to do Your work, my feet to walk Your path, my mouth to speak Your words, my eyes to see Your will, my ears to hear Your voice. Every part of me, Father, is at Your disposal because not only do You belong here, but You own the whole house.”

She has also discussed the importance of discipleship and mentoring others.

“I think one of the main ways [to promote discipleship] is by highlighting to younger people in the church the need that they have for the more seasoned, more mature believers,” she told Christianity Today. “Let those young believers know, The resources you need to be successful in your marriage are sitting right around you if you would be receptive, teachable, and humble enough to hear wisdom. Same thing for business builders, young entrepreneurs. There are businesspeople that have been doing this longer than you. They are your resources for how to honor God, have integrity in your business but also do it with success.”

She added, “It has to be something that [we talk about] just as clearly as we speak about salvation and just as clearly as we talk about the Holy Spirit or the fruit of the Spirit — we talk about some things very didactically and clearly from the pulpit — this should be one of them as well. Discipleship is available to us in this body, if we’ll just take advantage of it.”
