Why Tim Tebow Prioritizes Serving Others: ‘Change the Focus’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Former NFL star Tim Tebow lives out the Christian calling of putting others before yourself, a practice he prioritizes even when things go wrong.
“I think one of the biggest ways to get out of a slump, out of a pity party, is to get out of your comfort zone and help someone else,” Tebow said. “I have an agreement with one of my friends that when something bad would happen to me, that I wasn’t gonna do anything before I served.”
“I would get cut from a team; there would be something disappointing; there would be whatever. It doesn’t matter where I’m at, we would meet and we would go serve,” he continued. “No one needs to see, no one needs to know, but we would just serve.”
“When you go serve, it changes so much in such a way that it’s almost hard to even put into words,” he added. “So much of what we do in our lives is about us. And when we finally change the focus and the narrative of not putting us first, but actually serving, there’s something that drastically changes.”
By prioritizing service above all else, Tebow lives out one of Jesus’ most countercultural teachings—that the first shall be last, and the last shall be first.
In Matthew 20, Jesus tells the disciples, “The rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave. Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.”
Jesus repeats this teaching multiple times throughout the Gospel to reinforce how important service is in the kingdom of God. While it can be difficult to understand how to practically live this out in today’s world, Tebow gives an incredible example of how to put others first—even when life gets difficult.
One way he does this is through his Tim Tebow Foundation, as he serves the “Most Vulnerable People.”
“Just as Jesus intentionally sought to serve vulnerable people during His time on earth, God was calling Tim to set his sights on a new MVP – the Most Vulnerable People on Earth,” his website shares.

He touched on many topics in his life: his childhood, sports career, his faith, and charity work. However, Tebow’s thesis to everyone was to stay focused on what really matters in life.
“I would lose perspective because I would get caught up in a game, caught up in winning, caught up in a championship, caught up in pursuing a goal, and it’s so easy to forget what ultimately really matters,” Tebow expressed. “Why is a day of prayer so important? Because it’s a reminder to us of what really matters, that we are invited, not just today, but every day in prayer to be a part of what God is doing and then to be connected to the source of life.”
Ron Inge, the president of Southwest Florida Community Prayer Breakfast, Inc. stated, “It was a beautiful morning to gather for prayer, self-reflection and perspective, and you couldn’t ask for a more awe-inspiring, spiritual setting than watching the sun rise over the outfield fence at JetBlue Park. Every year, the National Day of Prayer helps reset our focus on what truly matters in life – love and respect for one another.”
