Would You Watch a Movie Made With AI?

A UK-based studio called Pigeon Shrine is creating movies and TV shows with the help of AI.

Through a new process called “aiMation,” Pigeon Shrine puts “creativity first, ethically using all of the tools at our disposal to bring the impossible to life.”

“The company says its visualization period is coupled with AI-powered virtual production which speeds up the production process and means actors come in towards the end of the process,” Deadline reported. “VFX work is carried out earlier in the process than is traditional, the company says, meaning less of a scramble and squeeze at the end of the production process. The ‘healthier and more equitable’ working process means staff at the company only work four days per week.”

Pigeon Shrine used aiMation to create its first project, WHERE THE ROBOTS GROW.

“We’ve been busy, find out more courtesy of Deadline,” the company wrote.

The movie is “set in a future where Earth’s last survivors send robots to farm a new world they call Oracle. The latest model of robot, Cru, finds his purpose in life redefined by a pod carrying the last human baby.”

“We use human talent at every stage of production, AI is always a co-pilot,” the company explained. “WHERE THE ROBOTS GROW is voiced by human actors, but we use a technique called VoCap, which can wrap new voices around their performances, allowing them to play a broader spectrum of characters. The film is human-written and directed, but we use an entirely different process to reach our end result, allowing for a much more collaborative and creative process for the entire team to be heard.”

The company told Deadline, “We don’t see AiMation as a cost saving pipeline, its purpose is to allow creatives more time to do the part they love – create, and allow technology to help them achieve that vision in way that would have previously been impossible for them without major studio backing.”

AI is coming to the entertainment industry. Disney CEO Bob Iger is urging moviemakers to embrace the tech, as Movieguide® previously reported:

While at the Canva Create showcase, Disney CEO Bob Iger told the crowd that new technology — like artificial intelligence — should be embraced, not avoided.

“Walt Disney himself was a big believer in using technology in the early days to tell better stories. And he thought that technology in the hands of a great storyteller was unbelievably powerful,” Iger said during his presentation at the showcase.

According to Variety, “Iger, who is an investor and board member of the privately held online design platform, commended Canva for embracing the potential of generative AI tools and other cutting-edge technologies to make high-end visual media design tools readily available to everyday users.”

He challenged the creative community to shift their mindset on artificial intelligence.

“Don’t fixate on its ability to be disruptive — fixate on [tech’s] ability to make us better and tell better stories. Not only better stories, but to reach more people,” he urged.
