YouVersion Bible App officially surpassed 1 billion installs, a milestone that is a result of staying true to purpose over profit.
“Since the very beginning of YouVersion, we’ve been driven by purpose, not profit. And for us, that purpose is clear: to get God’s Word to everyone, everywhere, every day. We believe the Bible should be accessible without distraction or compromise. This kind of access shouldn’t have a barrier to entry, and we shouldn’t feel beholden to a bottom line because of it,” Bobby Gruenwald, the app’s founder, wrote in a letter for Salt & Light.
“When I hear estimations of our value, I don’t think, ‘How can we capitalise on this?’ but instead, ‘Are we stewarding this influence well?’ and ‘Are we thinking as boldly as that number suggests we should?'” he added.
However, that kind of focus requires Gruenwald and his team to be “intentional” about the mission God has given them.
“There are tensions, of course. Operating like a tech organisation means we move fast and value innovation, but we’re first and foremost a ministry. We strive to remain focused on our mission and to center it in all we do,” he emphasized.
So, what makes YouVersion different from the rest of the tech world?

“Our team includes seasoned business leaders from SpaceX, major Silicon Valley firms, and Fortune 500 companies who could be making an impact elsewhere, but they’ve chosen to use their innovative minds and experience to make a difference at YouVersion,” Gruenwald revealed. “It’s rare to find a company where every single member of the team is passionate about the purpose driving the work each day. That’s what makes YouVersion different: Everyone is deeply invested in the vision.”
Thanks to the team’s focus on sharing the God’s word with as many people as possible, they achieved their install record last month.
“We’re seeing incredible global momentum around Bible engagement, and it’s humbling to be part of what’s happening,” Gruenewald said in a press release. “Every day we hear stories of lives being changed — someone overcoming addiction, marriages being restored, people encountering Scripture in their own language for the first time. This milestone is really a celebration of the Bible itself and what happens when people around the world work together to get it into the hands and hearts of more people.”
YouVersion isn’t slowing down. Thus month, the kicked off a “Global Bible Month” challenge.
“For the next 30 days, million’s of people around the world are celebrating the life-changing power of God’s Word through daily Scripture engagement,” the app wrote in a post on Instagram.
DUCK DYNASTY star Sadie Robertson Huff even made her Time’s Square billboard debut for the challenge.
“No other reason I’d want to be on a billboard in Times Square!! ‘For YOUR name and renown are the desire of our souls!'” she posted on Instagram. “Go get in the word my friends! It’s global bible month!”
