A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT - 11/1/2021

Quality:
****
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
Set in Montana between 1910 and 1935, A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT centers on two brothers, their father and the fly-fishing that shapes their lives. The film ties religion, family and fishing together in an unusual and intelligent manner as it deals with a family whose members are unable to help or communicate with one another. Regrettably, there are very brief scenes of drinking and gambling and partial nudity.

TEXAS RANGERS is an old-fashioned western morality tale built on a strong Christian foundation but revealing the violence of the Old West. The low budget shows at times, but the leads do a good job with their roles, there is a clear storyline, and the characters are well-developed.

THE BIG YEAR - 11/1/2021

Quality:
****
Content:
-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
THE BIG YEAR stars Steve Martin, Owen Wilson, and Jack Black at his most appealing as three competitive American birdwatchers trying to set a birdwatching record. THE BIG YEAR is charming, funny, and heartwarming, with a strong pro-family message, but there is a fair amount of light and not-so-light foul language, so caution is advised for older children.

THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX - 11/1/2021

-1 Caution advised for older children, including teenagers, and sensitive adults.
THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX is a refreshingly hilarious and creative stop-motion animated movie about a fantastically free-spirited fox who slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief, consequently endangering his family and the whole animal community. The movie is well directed and cleverly written, with some positive moral elements, but caution is warranted for some light humanist elements, animated action violence, and alcohol use.

GNOMEO AND JULIET - 11/1/2021

Quality:
****
Content:
+3 Some minor questionable elements. (Media-wisdom is suggested to discuss.)
GNOMEO & JULIET is a delightful, inventive, funny animated musical reinvention for families of Shakespeare’s play ROMEO & JULIET, using the backdrop of feuding garden gnomes in present-day London. Even better, the movie’s “Love thy neighbor” message contains a redemptive theme of forgiveness.

JOHNNY ENGLISH - 11/1/2021

+1 Moderately questionable elements. (Discernment required for young children.)
JOHNNY ENGLISH is a delightfully silly summer comedy starring Rowan Atkinson, Mr. Bean, in the title role, as a bumbling spy clerk who gets the chance to be England’s number one secret agent when the Crown Jewels are stolen. Fans of James Bond, Inspector Clouseau, and Maxwell Smart, and those who would like a cleaner AUSTIN POWERS movie, may love this genial spoof, which, however, contains a few obscenities, brief toilet humor, and other light objectionable content.

WALKING WITH HERB is a whimsical, lighthearted, funny comedy about restoring faith in God by being obedient to Him, with an uplifting message about helping and inspiring other people, but there’s some universalism with a general references to Buddhism and a comical aside about someone being “inclusive.”
