Episode 1, Season 2, of AMERICA’S SWEETHEARTS: DALLAS COWBOYS CHEERLEADERS offers an intriguing inside look at the process of creating the famous Dallas Cowboys Cheerleading team. The first episode moves quickly. It has a strong moral worldview, with overt Christian, pro-capitalist content. For example, it stresses friendship and hard work. Contestants frequently compliment and encourage one another. Also, one contestant mentions attending a church event, another talks about praying before her audition, and marriage vows take place before a large wooden cross. However, the women wear cheerleading uniforms, there are three light obscenities, and someone makes a joke about marijuana. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.

Some applicants (known as the “comeback girls”) are auditioning for a second or third time, hoping that this will be the year they make the prestigious team. Others are trying out for the first time, excited at the prospect of joining the squad. Also, returning members of the Cowboys cheerleading squad must re-audition to regain their old spots.

Another applicant, Charly, auditioned the previous year but was ultimately cut before making the team. She’s dedicated to joining the squad this season, because she suffered a pulmonary embolism shortly before tryouts and is now more focused on achieving her dream than ever.
The cheerleaders travel to the Cowboys stadium for the first round of final tryouts. They perform solo dance routines for the judge’s panel and take part in a group cheer routine with other auditioners. The episode concludes at the end of the first day, with the judges still deliberating on who will advance to the next round and which ladies they’ll eliminate. They will choose finalists to the Cowboys training camp, where they eliminate girls one by one until they reach a squad of 36 cheerleaders.
