More Detail:
BIRD BOX BARCELONA is a spinoff movie to the 2018 Netflix hit BIRD BOX, which starred Sandra Bullock as a woman who embarks on a dangerous quest to save her children from society that has gone insane and committed mass suicide due to seeing horrific visions. The first movie was grim and disturbing, but had a fast-moving plot, a happy ending and great performances.
BIRD BOX BARCELONA has none of these things., Its entire cast is composed of unknowns, it is bleak from start to finish, and the characters are written so poorly and unsympathetically that viewers have no one to care about or root for. It also doesn’t help that its threadbare storyline manages to be both repetitive and confusing at the same time.
And worst of all, the movie adds a depraved and disturbing, anti-Christian focus to its main concept this time around. The movie has nothing but contempt for Christians in particular and viewers in general and is an absolute must to avoid.
The original BIRD BOX revolved around the fact that people around the world suddenly saw mysterious creatures who appeared in the form of their worst personal fears and drove them to commit suicide instantly. Anyone who wanted to survive had to blindfold themselves whenever outdoors or near windows.
Sandra Bullock and a terrific supporting cast led by John Malkovich played several people who attempted to flee the cities and head for a far-flung locale in which people were able to live
safely free of the evil visions. In BIRD BOX BARCELONA, we follow a man named Sebastian, who is wandering the title city in search of other people, supposedly for strength in numbers as they all seek to evade the visions.
However, Sebastian also has his young daughter with him, who seems sweet at times but then suddenly encourages him to “save” others from their fearsome situation by ripping their blindfolds off and causing them to commit suicide. He also slits the throats and other body parts of those whom he comes across that have already attempted to kill themselves but failed.
Whenever he causes a suicide or outright murders people, their souls shoot quickly to Heaven, which is what his daughter means by saying he “saves” them, and she tells him he’s a shepherd of these people. This gruesome view of things is made more hideous by the fact Sebastian’s facial appearance is similar to Christ’s, thus making this seem to be a willfully blasphemous take-off of Jesus as the Good Shepherd.
Aside from avoiding the visions and causing the death of others, Sebastian and his fellow humans are on the run from other evil humans who have managed to travel without blindfolds yet avoid committing suicide. These “seers” are led by an evil Catholic priest, who tells the people he comes across that the horrific visions are actually God and His angels as he either forces their eyelids open (leading to their immediate suicides) or gouges out the eyes of those who refuse to look.
SPOILER ALERT: It’s eventually revealed that Sebastian’s daughter is actually dead, and she’s appearing as an evil vision to him. END SPOILER.
Sebastian ultimately meets a single woman who’s on the run with a young girl who’s not her child, trying to escape to another city where she hopes they can be safe and reunite the girl with her actual mother.
Can Sebastian control his evil impulses and actually save their lives? Can they steer clear of the evil priest and his minions?
It’s hard to care about the answer to those questions since the movie so willfully perverts the idea of salvation, souls, the essential value and beauty of human life and the work of clergy who devote their lives to doing God’s work. BIRD BOX BARCELONA is a wholly unpleasant movie. It features multiple graphic ways that people kill themselves (including a girl throwing herself off a rooftop) and has a debased view of humanity and God’s gift of salvation, plus lots of strong foul language and a bleak ending.
BIRD BOX BARECLONA is totally unacceptable and abhorrent.
