ENTERTAINING ANGELS: THE DOROTHY DAY STORY

The Roman Catholic Paulist Productions produces a worthwhile period-piece in ENTERTAINING ANGELS: THE DOROTHY DAY STORY. A dark-eyed Moira Kelly portrays Miss Day as a feisty radical in the first quarter of the 20th century, advocating the overthrow of most anything contrary to liberal thinking. Communism, nihilism and the personal problems associated with sexual liberation plague the opening scenes of her early life, a foundation of depravity from which Dorothy Day must be delivered. Melinda Dillon plays a nun nobody could dislike. Martin Sheen serves as Dorothy’s messenger from God. These two Christians lead Dorothy into the way of the Lord. Her passion to assist the down-and-out leads Dorothy into a powerful ministry to the poor.

This movie shows a sinner saved by grace. If it did not deal with evil in its few opening scenes, we could not fully understand the uphill climb of a woman who defines the word faithful. It may uplift your own aspirations. It will certainly be a powerful testimony to those who look for solutions to life’s problems in the leftist social movements of the age. A Communist friend tells Dorothy when she doubts her mission and ministry that the Communist talk about helping the poor, while, with her faith, she has actually helped hundreds.
