"Pride Cometh Before a Dance"
What You Need To Know:
HOW SHE MOVE is supposedly inspirational. The smart girl convinces her skeptical mother that her sexual and violent gyrations on the dance floor are beautiful. However, MOVIEGUIDE® cannot commend HOW SHE MOVE, because it has abundant foul language as well as some sex, violence and drugs. Its biggest flaw is pride. Sadly, even some excellent movies about ethnic groups encourage people to fall into the self-destructive sin of pride. Instead, movies are needed that aim at encouraging young people to be righteous.
(Pa, LLL, V, S, N, DD, M) A generally pagan worldview with no mention of God, main character wants to escape the ghetto while at the same time embracing aspects of the culture; 28 obscenities, no profanities and lots of prideful verbal boasting; some fighting and dance competition, where dance routines often mimic violence; brief sex scene and dance routines often mimic sex; upper male nudity; no alcohol, smoking and drug references; and, dishonesty.
HOW SHE MOVE is another step dancing competition movie that proves that pride may be a bigger problem in the ghettos than it is in star-studded Hollywood. Step dancing looks like sex and violence put to strident music. Also, the people who compete on the dance floor are portrayed like gang members who wear their pride on their sleeve just asking for you to challenge it.
The story is about a smart girl named Raya (Rutina Wesley) who returns to a Toronto ghetto from an exclusive prep school. She had to leave school because her family spent all they had trying to save her sister who eventually died of a drug overdose.
Raya soon decides that the path back to school could be paved by winning a $50,000 step dancing competition. She teams up with some rather rough characters to get on a step dancing team.
HOW SHE MOVE is supposedly inspirational. The smart girl finally convinces her skeptical mother that her sexual and violent gyrations on the dance floor are a beautiful thing. Granted DANCING WITH THE STARS can be very sensual, but seldom does it come across as some kind of war-dance. As in other step-dancing movies, competing dancers are shown getting in each other’s face and going from “dancing” directly into fighting.
The Bible warns against the dangers of pride. In today’s inner city, it seems that defending your pride is a cause worthy to give up your life. This was condemned in WEST SIDE STORY many years ago, but remains a problem today. And, it’s not just an African-American problem. The movie BROOKLYN RULES featured prideful white thugs willing to die over who gets to sit in a chair in a restaurant.
People can have legitimate differences in taste. Some people like opera. Some hate it. Some like country music. Others can’t stand it. That’s fine, but some forms of art are debased. Some step-dancing moves are similar to clogging or even gymnastics, but when dancers simulate sex and stomp around like thugs looking for a fight it goes off course. It can be further led off course by music with vile lyrics.
MOVIEGUIDE® cannot commend HOW SHE MOVE. It has abundant foul language as well as some sex, violence and drugs, but its biggest flaw is pride. Sadly, even some excellent movies about blacks are aimed at providing reasons for blacks to be proud. Movies are needed that aim at encouraging young people to be righteous.
