More Detail:

MIDWAY (2019) is a patriotic war movie about America’s response to Imperial Japan’s attack on the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. MIDWAY is an exciting, fast-paced, well-crafted war movie, but it does have an excessive amount of foul language.

As the movie opens in early December, 1941, America has been able to stay out of World War II for the most part. However, when Imperial Japan bombs Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, the United States is forced to defend itself. Pearl Harbor is devastated, but, thankfully, as a miracle, not all the ships were docked there as they were supposed to be. Thus, the Japanese didn’t accomplish all of the damage they wanted to do. As a result, they planned for another attack.

Strategic Analyst Edwin Layton told the head of the Navy of his prediction of the Pearl Harbor attack happening, but the commander didn’t take the hint. When the attack actually does happen, the Navy needs a new commander. That role is taken on by Admiral Chester Nimitz. Nimitz faces a big challenge, but he believes in Edwin’s ability to decode and meet the challenge. With his team, Edwin starts to decode where the next Japanese attack may occur. The Navy soon develops its own attack plan.

MIDWAY is a fast paced, exciting war movie. Audiences interested in that type of movie will not be disappointed. The movie has a lot of special effects, but because the storyline is good, the audience forgets about the effects and is invested in the story and the plot.

MIDWAY (2019) has a strong moral worldview of sacrifice and standing up in the midst of adversity. The movie is Pro-American in its positive depiction of the American fighting men and women, but there are no rousing, gung-ho, patriotic speeches as is common in this type of movie. That said, the themes of sacrifice and courage are clear. There also is a good example of marriage and family. At one point, however, one of the characters says he doesn’t believe in God to the Chaplain, but the Chaplain is honored at the end. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children for the excessive amount of foul language in MIDWAY (2019).
