ALMOST CHRISTMAS

"Can Christmas Be the Same Without Mom?"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

ALMOST CHRISTMAS is a comedy about an African-American family coming together for Christmas for the first time after the loss of their beloved mother. Walter is having his entire family over for Christmas, including his dramatic sister-in-law, his two daughters that can’t get along, Rachel and Cheryl, his son who’s hooked on prescription drugs, and another son obsessed with focusing on his electoral campaign. Will they be able to love one another without their mother?

ALMOST CHRISTMAS has some heartfelt moments and a positive Christian, moral worldview. However, it also has some cautionary elements including making light of an adulterous affair, some dysfunctional behavior and plenty of foul language. The family goes to church together, and the father is recognized for the work he has done for the church, although other members of the family say they haven’t been to church in years. Many moments are sentimental, including characters looking back on the life of a mother and wife they loved deeply. This will remind viewers of their own families. That said, ALMOST CHRISTMAS could use more conflict and jeopardy.

More Detail:

ALMOST CHRISTMAS is a comedy about an African-American family coming together for Christmas for the first time after the loss of their beloved mother. ALMOST CHRISTMAS has some heartfelt moments and a positive Christian, moral worldview, but it also has some cautionary elements including making light of an affair, plenty of PG-13 foul language and some innuendo.

Walter Myers loved his wife deeply and built a family of four children with her, but when she passes unexpectedly, he is devastated. This is the first Christmas without Momma Myers and the entire family will have to learn to come together.

The first to arrive is Aunt May, who comes days earlier then expect. Aunt May is a diva backup singer, who wants to help Walter prepare the house and food for the others coming.

Soon, Christian and his family comes, but Christian is totally distracted with his campaign race. After many trials to get there, Rachel arrives at the home with her daughter. Rachel is in serious need of money, has just gone through a divorce and is in school to become a lawyer. Walter already knows Rachel and Cheryl won’t get along, but when Cheryl comes with her loud-mouthed husband, Lonnie, it’s very clear that Cheryl and Rachel have tension. The last to show up is Evan, who hurt his shoulder in a football injury and is still using his prescription medicine.

The entire family is finally all under one roof, but it is not long until they are fighting and arguing. In fact, almost immediately Rachel and Cheryl threaten to leave the house because they are fighting. Evan’s wife Sonya is upset because Evan brought his campaign manager to the house for Christmas, to make sure won’t miss a moment of campaigning. Finally, the family is able to attend Church together, from Walter’s request. At the service, the church mentions Walter’s wife and the funeral service to the church. Later, Walter goes to a shelter where he and his wife volunteered. The rest of the family is reminded that they miss their mother and question if they can have Christmas without her.

ALMOST CHRISTMAS has a positive Christian, moral worldview, but there are some cautionary elements. The family has to learn to love and forgive each other no matter what the circumstance. The family goes to church together, and the father is recognized for the work he has done for the church, though other members of the family say they have not been to church in years. Even so, there is an affair in the movie that is laughed off, and a depiction of a divorce that is also laughed off. Also, ALMOST CHRISTMAS has excessive language and profanities.

ALMOST CHRISTMAS is reminiscent of some of our favorite movies of the 90’s, with warm lighting and a heartfelt message. Many moments are sentimental, looking back on the life of a mother and wife that loved deeply, which will remind audiences of their own families. That said, the movie doesn’t have enough conflict and jeopardy.
