More Detail:
BACK TO EDEN is a profoundly Christian documentary about a man who listened to God to learn how to grow a super productive, very easy to maintain garden. There is nothing objectionable, and the gardener constantly gives glory to God for each remarkable success.
Paul Gautschi grew up in Los Angeles tending a family garden with considerable hard work. When he married, he moved to Washington State and built a house on some land with room for a grove and garden. He was disheartened that the well he dug could never supply enough water for a garden.
After years of struggling to grow a garden, he asked God for help. God showed him a nearby forest and pointed out it grows just fine without work or watering because the ground gets covered annually with leaves, limbs and organic material. This “mulch” captures and maintains moisture while providing a rich source of all needed nutrients. Gautschi thickly covered the ground under the trees in his orchard with wood chips. The result was remarkable.
Still frustrated with his garden, God advised him to use wood chips there as well. Again Gautschi was amazed. With a thick bed of wood chips, there’s no need to water and very little need to weed. With his chicken pen and byproducts, he has no need for industrial fertilizers. There is also no need for tilling. You simply add more wood chips as needed.
Gautschi’s appreciation for God is infectious. He constantly gives God all the credit for his remarkable success. He enjoys spending time with God in his garden.
The video’s title BACK TO EDEN is based on Gautschi’s belief that the salvation made possible through Jesus Christ restores a relationship to God that’s personal and enjoyable, which is the way God intended it to be in the Garden of Eden. He believes God delights in showing mankind the wonderful things He created for mankind’s benefit. The movie includes segments where others are having success with “Back to Eden” gardens.
At one point in the movie, Gautschi discusses 2 Corinthians 5:18: “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” While Paul’s gardens present a very tangible example of reconciliation, the concept applies to all areas of life, including media. Movieguide® seeks to bring the entertainment industry in accord with God’s perfect design in that a redeemed media would be as beneficial to the world’s culture as redeemed gardening techniques are to growing food.
God’s desire is to restore all aspects of His creation. As Jesus instructed His disciples to pray, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).
