FRAILTY stars Matthew McConaughey as a troubled young man who goes into a FBI office and tells them that he knows who the “God’s Hands” killer is. The FBI agent in charge of the case listens carefully as the young man tells how his widowed father forced his two young sons to help him murder several people. According to the father, God told him that these weren’t people at all, but demons who committed terrible evil acts.
There are several crazy, unique plot twists in FRAILTY, but what’s happening is not always clear. It turns out, however, that the father apparently was right about God, and that the people he kills are murderers in their own right. Of course, God would never tell someone to commit this kind of horrible vigilante justice, no matter how reprehensible the crime. Thus, the theology in this movie is all fouled up. It may make for a quirky ending to a violent horror flick, but it is not only thoroughly distasteful, it is thoroughly stupid as well. More pernicious than this, perhaps, is the emotional, spiritual torture that the children characters undergo in this movie. It’s truly abhorrent

(FRFRFR, ABABAB, C, OO, LL, VVV, S, N, A, D, M) Extremely mixed up, false, abhorrent theological worldview of God, mankind and the demonic; no mention of the Bible, however, though one man appears to have a small card on a bulletin board with Jesus Christ’s picture on it (to what purpose, the movie does not reveal); scenes of occult visions; 9 obscenities and 6 profanities; strong, but not always bloody, violence, includes implied ax murders, knocking people unconscious, man forces young sons to help him commit and cover up murders of “demons,” brief images of corpses, depicted patricide, and brutal implied matricide with blood splattering killer and objects; briefly implied fornication; partial natural nudity; widower drinks beers in front of young sons; smoking; and, miscellaneous immorality such as kidnapping and man thinks son may be a demon so he punishes son by locking him in cellar for weeks.

It’s often amazing how apparently intelligent people can seem so theologically dense sometimes. That’s why the false, abhorrent theology in the new horror movie, FRAILTY (which has gotten some rave reviews from people like Stephen King), is so painful. Not necessarily because the movie will be a very popular one and, hence, lead many people astray, but especially because it represents such a silly waste of good brain power.
FRAILTY stars Matthew McConaughey as a troubled young man who goes into a FBI office and tells them that he knows who the “God’s Hands” killer is. The FBI agent in charge of the case, played by Powers Boothe, listens carefully as the young man tells how his widowed father, played by Bill Paxton, forced his two young sons to help him murder several people. According to the father, angels and God told him that these weren’t people at all, but demons who have committed terrible evil acts. The movie then takes viewers on a horrific journey as one of the sons starts expressing more and more doubts (and more rebellion) about his father’s allegedly holy mission.
There are several crazy, unique plot twists in FRAILTY, but what’s happening is not always clear. In the end, however, the movie shows viewers that the father apparently was right about God and the people he kills. In fact, it turns out that the people he kills are murderers in their own right.
Of course, God would never tell someone to commit this kind of horrible vigilante justice, no matter how reprehensible the crime. Furthermore, God has given us a book of instruction, the Bible, and a means of instruction, churches and church leaders, which are supposed to prevent people from making up their own crazy theologies. Also, although once in a very great while, a person may be possessed by demonic forces, people are not demons.
Thus, the theology in this movie is all fouled up. It may make for a quirky ending to a violent horror flick, but it’s not only thoroughly distasteful, it’s thoroughly stupid as well. More pernicious than this, perhaps, is the emotional and spiritual torture that the children characters undergo in this movie. It’s truly abhorrent.
