What You Need To Know:

FREE STYLE is a relatively family-friendly drama about a young amateur motorcross racer trying out for the pro circuit. Cale and his friend, Justin, have long wanted to be professional motorcycle racers, but racing is Cale’s only chance at success. Cale is a mixed race young man, whose black father abandoned his family, including his white mother and younger sister. Cale and Justin’s rival is a conceited young man who often bumps other racers to win. Cale’s plans to win the spot on the pro tour are eventually sidetracked when his mother suffers a traffic accident and must stay home from work in the small diner she owns. Cale will have to rely on his friends in town to fulfill his dreams.

FREE STYLE is an engaging drama about the second most popular racing sport in the U.S., next to NASCAR. The racing scenes are exciting. The low budget sometimes shows, however, leading to serviceable writing and directing. Best of all, despite some mostly light foul language, FREE STYLE has a strong moral worldview. In fact, the hero prays to God right before the final big race that will determine his future.

Content:

(BBB, C, LL, V, N, A, M) Very strong moral, light redemptive worldview with two mentions of prayer, including hero prays to God before the final big race; 15 obscenities (three “d” words, six “h” words and three short “a” words) and seven light exclamatory profanities (e.g., My God) during story and one “h” word and two My God words during outtakes in end credits; light violence includes motorcycle racing with falls and crashes, young man smashes rival’s car window, and some fighting; no sex scenes but young adults kiss; brief upper male nudity; light beer drinking; no smoking or drugs; and, hero’s father has abandoned the family, girlfriend cheats on hero and lies to him, and angry hero gets into trouble and tries to evade responsibility but is chastised.

More Detail:

FREE STYLE is a relatively family-friendly movie about a young amateur motorcross racer trying to gain a spot on the pro circuit. Most of the movie is pretty family-friendly, but there is a lot of mostly light foul language, marring the movie for children.

The story focuses on the friendship between Cale and Justin, two amateur, older teenage racers who have dreamed of turning pro since they were children. The movie opens with Cale, played by Corbin Bleu of the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL movies, forgoing second place in a race to help Justin, whose bike crashed at the final turn.

Cale is a mixed race young man, whose black father abandoned his family, including his white mother and younger sister. Cale and Justin’s rival is Derek, a conceited young man who often bumps other racers to win. Cale’s girlfriend, Crystal, is upset that Cale’s mind only seems set on becoming pro, not going to college.

Cale sees Crystal cheating on him with Derek in Derek’s car. Cale smashes the window and scuffles with Derek. Happily for him, the town sheriff has eyes for Cale’s mother, so he only forces Cale to pay for the window. Cale loses his sponsor, but is able to buy a discarded bike that he can fix.

Cale’s plans to win the spot on the pro tour are sidetracked again when his mother suffers a traffic accident and has to stay home from work in the small diner she owns. Cale will have to rely on his friends in town to fulfill his dreams.
