What You Need To Know:
GOOD NEIGHBORS is awful. It’s hyped as a dark thriller, but the movie’s not thrilling or suspenseful at all. It drains any thrill and suspense by revealing the serial killer too quickly. Worse, the movie contains an abundance of violence, bloodletting, revenge, salacious content, excessive foul language, and completely immoral characters in a very strong pagan world. There’s nothing redeeming about GOOD NEIGHBORS, and sane people will want to avoid it at all costs.

REVIEW: GOOD NEIGHBORS is an ultra-violent thriller about three neighbors, Victor, Spencer and Louise, who live in a three-story brownstone apartment building in the NDG district of Montreal. The three unlikely friends enjoy sharing tales of a serial killer who’s raping dead women in their local neighborhood. However, as the violence gets close to home, all three of them begin to suspect that one of them may, indeed, be the killer.
Louise loves her cats. Her cats are her life, and her neighbor, Spencer, is the only human contact she has apart from going to work. Louise and Spencer regularly get together to share a drink and a story about the latest murder victims. Spencer’s wheelchair may bind him to the building, but he lives vicariously through Louise’s stories of the local neighborhood. When Victor moves into the building, the other tenants meet him with some suspicion, but he and Louise soon begin dating.
As the icy cold of winter progresses, the building’s tenants board up their windows. Everyone gets on edge while being shut inside, and Louise’s cats cause consternation to another neighbor. The angry tenant poisons Louise’s cats, spurring Louise to plan mortal revenge on the woman. As Louise’s sanity spirals downward from the loss of her cats, Louise kills the woman who murdered her cats. Louise sets the murder scene to look like the serial killer attacked, even raping the woman with an apparatus. However, as Louise is leaving the scene of the crime, she comes face-to-face with the real killer, someone with whom she is all too familiar. Now, distrust pervades Louise’s relationships with both Spencer and Victor, as the unlikely friends seek to frame each other for the serial murders.
GOOD NEIGHBORS is not good. It is hyped as a noir thriller, but the movie is not thrilling at all. It drains any thrill by revealing the serial killer too quickly. Although the performances are very good, the suspense falls flat. Instead, the movie becomes a flat and unbelievable character showcase of a woman’s downward spiral into madness and murder simply because her cats are poisoned.
The movie has deplorable, sexually violent content, including two scenes of explicitly depicted rape and assault on murdered victims, depicted fornication. It also contains an abundance of violence, bloodletting, revenge, excessive foul language, and completely immoral characters set in a very strong pagan world. GOOD NEIGHBORS is horrific, and sane people will want to avoid it at all costs.
