IT’S A GIRL is a powerful documentary about the slaughter of female children, especially in countries like China and India.
The movie starts with an Indian woman saying she killed her eight daughters at each one of their births with a big smile on her face. The movie develops the stories of several people in India and China who are impacted by or even participated in gendercide.
In both countries, culture is a motivating factor for the killing of baby girls. In India, they have a saying that raising a daughter is like watering a neighbor’s tree. Another saying states, “A daughter is a burden on her father’s head.” Not only does the daughter leave her home upon marriage, and therefore not provide for her parents, but also a daughter requires a dowry, which is very expensive for poor families.
In western countries, there are 108 boys for every 100 girls born. In India, it’s 140 to 100. The mortality is 40% higher for women children and about 100,00 die every year. A son gets the dowry; a daughter costs the dowry. Meanwhile, abortion has just increased the infanticide 30%.
IT’S A GIRL tells the story of women killed by their husbands for having girls. It also shows how the surplus of men has increased the sex trade and even the stealing of children.
In China in 1979, the big government communist tyranny enacted the one child policy. The Communist Party enforced that policy by seizing pregnant women and forcing abortions. Over 400 million baby girls in China have been killed, bigger than the U.S. population. In China, there are about 40 million abortions a year or 40 every day.
Even so, IT’S A GIRL isn’t about statistics. It’s about the costs to society. There are millions of men in China who will never be able to get married because there are no women.
