NOBODY KNOWS

"A Story of Abandoned Children"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

NOBODY KNOWS is a disturbing tragedy from Japan about four abandoned children left by their mother to fend for themselves. The children try to make do, and at times succeed well, but their dire situation eventually overwhelms them. Fourteen-year-old actor Yagira Yuya gives an amazing performance as the children’s older, 12-year-old brother, Akira. He, his little brother and two sisters are determined to survive solely on their own wits and courage. As Akira explains to one of his friends, when their mother abandons them, they don’t want to go to the authorities, because the authorities will split them up forever. That decision proves fatal, however, in a way that is reminiscent of Luis Bunuel’s unforgettable portrayal of Mexican slum children in the 1950s, LOS OLVIDADOS.

Inspired by a true story, NOBODY KNOWS moves slowly and is too long. It is often captivating, however, and funny, despite the children’s tragic circumstances. Led by Yagira, the child actors do an incredible job bringing their characters to life. Even so, the ending to their story is very depressing. Hopefully, it will inspire people not to completely split up siblings when they are abandoned or orphaned.
