SALT AND LIGHT: THE MIRACLE IN HOLLYWOOD is a fascinating documentary about a Christian coffee house called The Salt Company that opened on August 3, 1968 in Hollywood. The Salt Company hosted musical groups such as Bob Marlowe, Larry Norman, and Randy Stonehill, who paved the way for contemporary Christian music and the Jesus Movement revival.
When Don Williams, a young assistant pastor at Hollywood Presbyterian Church, started talking to some of the hippies moving into the Hollywood area in the 1960s, he decided to provide them with the space where they could hear music peppered by the Gospel, called the Salt Company Coffeehouse. The Salt Company Band, the musical group that played there, was not only inspired by God’s Holy Spirit but also by terrific musicians. Very soon, the lines of people trying to get into the coffee house reached around the block.
Great musicians joined the group and played at the coffee house, and the lives of many of the street people caught up in the drugs and counter culture of runaways and dropouts in the hippie movement were transformed by the power of the music and the Holy Spirit. Don Williams and the other members of The Salt Company became their pastors and evangelists. The Salt Company reached out to students and others around Los Angeles and even set up a system of buses to take them to the beach, where the group played before large crowds of beach goers.
SALT AND LIGHT is a fascinating story of one of the several sources of the Jesus Movement. Of course, another one was occurring in Orange County with Chuck Smith. The new music playing at the coffee house inspired music still being played today in churches around the world. The revival became so big that the Jesus Movement was featured on the cover of Time Magazine, showing that God was not dead. Also, new coffee houses and ministries sprang up from Seattle to Akron, Ohio.
Although the reviewer was part of the counter-culture and didn’t come to Christ until 1975, the movie makes one wish they had visited the Salt Company Coffeehouse instead of the dens of iniquity. The documentary consists of archival footage, great music, and insightful interviews. It’s well worth watching.
