What You Need To Know:
STANDING STILL is entertaining and provides some chuckles, but it is lightweight. Still, the first-time director displays a flair. Despite some moral, redemptive elements, the movie contains excessive amounts of sexual immorality, foul language, nude shots, and hedonism. Also, one subplot involves very strong homosexual content. Tragically, this immoral paganism is the lifestyle of too many young adults in our society. We must redouble our efforts to redeem the values of our youth with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. After all, even the hedonistic filmmakers behind STANDING STILL seem to realize, at some level, the value of marriage, forgiveness and having good parents.
Content:
(PaPa, HoHoHo, B, C, LLL, V, SSS, NN, AA, DD, MM) Strong pagan worldview with very strong homosexual content and references, mitigated by a light endorsement of two heterosexual couples getting married and one with a baby on the way, plus nascent Christian element where ex-junkie father and son eventually reconcile after son forgives father; 78 mostly strong obscenities, two strong profanities, nine light profanities, and man vomits after drinking too much; light violence in one scene when man pushes another man into pool; very strong sexual content includes depicted fornication, implied fornication, men visit half-naked female dancers in Las Vegas for bachelor party, women dance with male stripper during bachelorette party, man solicits prostitute on street and gets arrested, young man sleeps with college girl who turns out to be 17 but he promises to get back with her when she turns 18 in a few months, and very strong homosexual elements include engaged woman's ex-lesbian lover tries to have homosexual relations with her but engaged woman eventually resists and lesbian seduces one of woman's female friends, who apparently decides to switch from men to her; extensive upper female nudity in strip club and upper female nudity in at least one other scene; alcohol use and drunken bachelor party; smoking and women smoke marijuana; and, personal conflicts between people reveal that some are more at fault than others, hedonism and immature college graduates.
More Detail:
STANDING STILL is an adult comedy about a group of hip college graduates who reunite in Los Angeles for the wedding of two friends. The movie affirms marriage, commitment and raising a child together at the very end, but the movie’s worldview is pagan and contains plenty of sexual content and nudity, including very strong homosexual elements.
Elise and Michael, the bride and groom, have invited their friends to spend the day before the wedding together. Their approaching wedding leads to conversations about marriage between the best man, Richie, and his live-in girlfriend of long standing, Samantha, who’s expecting more than just a proposal. A dramatic subplot involving Michael’s estranged father, two romantic triangles and another romantic subplot keep the story moving.
One of the romantic triangles involves Elise’s secret, ex-lesbian lover, Jennifer, who has flown in from London to attend the wedding. When Elise rebuffs Jennifer’s advances, Jennifer secretly hooks up with Lana, a pert blonde who’s involved in the other romantic triangle between her, her own ex-lover, Pockets, and an actor Lana slept with recently. Of course, the actor shows up at the party, because he’s the client of one of the young friends, a successful Hollywood agent named Quentin.
STANDING STILL is entertaining enough and provides more than a few chuckles, but it is pretty lightweight material, including its complicated subplots. Still, the first-time director, Matthew Cole Weiss, shows a flair for directing this ensemble and keeping many balls in the air at one time.
Regrettably, STANDING STILL contains abundant amounts of sexual immorality, foul language, nude shots, and youthful hedonism. Tragically, this immoral paganism is the lifestyle of too many young adults in our society. Christians must redouble their efforts to redeem the values of our youth with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. After all, even the hedonistic filmmakers behind STANDING STILL seem to realize, at some level, the value of marriage, forgiveness, raising a family, and having good parents. That’s because even pagans, humanists, promiscuous homosexuals, fornicators, slanderers, professional thieves, and other Christophobic hedonists live in a physical, spiritual universe created by a Personal God, the Great I Am of the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament. No one can escape that Truth. And, no one can escape Jesus Christ, who is the incarnation of Truth and who enlightens all men with Truth (John 14:6 and John 1:9). Believe in Jesus, and believe in God (John 14:1), and you will be saved (Romans 10:9).
