STAR WARS: EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

In the new STAR WARS movie by George Lucas, the galactic Republic has turned into a bureaucratic nightmare. Senator Palpatine, a secret villain calling himself Darth Sidious, is trying to consolidate his power. Two Jedi nights, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, are sent to a planet as ambassadors to solve the political despute. After rescuing the queen, they are forced to land on a desert planet. There, they find a young slave boy, Anakin Skywalker, who exhibits extraordinary ability to use the “Force.” Battles occur, sword fights take place, and there is great loss and surprising triumphs in the first episode of this imaginative space opera.

STAR WARS is an epic symphony based on mythic concepts. Throughout this story, in the midst of exciting action adventure, and humorous asides, George Lucas reveals mythic elements. There are constant references to be mindful of the living Force, which is personalized in this episode. In terms of action and plot, THE PHANTOM MENACE is comfortably PG. What is threatening is the New Age philosophy that creeps into this movie all too frequently. Concerned parents whose children demand to see it, should see STAR WARS with their children to help them think through the movie's theology.

Content:

(PaPa, BB, C, O, L, VV, M) New Age pagan worldview with strong moral elements, some redemptive content, many mythic teachings, and some occult elements where characters have magical powers, including ESP, mind control and foretelling the future without the power of the Holy Spirit, but mostly in the context of the New Age philosophy; one obscenity; lots of action space violence including “lightsaber” sword-type fights, man cut in half off screen then falls, army attacks, many droids destroyed, people wounded, but very little blood and gore; no sex; no nudity; no alcohol; no smoking; and, slavery but rebuked, one character steps in creature dung and villain manipulates political situation to gain power.
