SWINGERS is a low-budget movie that recreates the mood and feel of the swing era in the 1990’s as Mike, Trent and their other friends look for women in the nightclub scene. Mike has been living in Los Angeles for 6 months. He is crying to Trent about how he misses his ex-girlfriend back East. Trent is disgusted at Mike and persuades him to go to Vegas. They meet two cocktail waitress and go home with them. Trent works his way into the bedroom of one girl, while Mike confides to the other about his lost-love. Back in LA, Mike meets a struggling actress named Lorraine. Mike and Lorraine hit it off, and they swing dance through the night. When Mike arrives home, he gets a call from his old girlfriend back East. He must decide whether to go back home and re-kindle the flame, or stay in LA and have a future with Lorraine.
This story has been told many times: boy meets girl. It remains fresh in SWINGERS because of the break-neck dialogue, crisp ensemble acting and clever direction. Morally, this movie shows that a genuine personality can offer opportunities for genuine relationships, while inflated personalities yield shallow relationships. Despite this lesson, SWINGERS has many, many obscenities. With such trash-talk, moral Americans will have a difficult appreciating the love story.
