THE HANDMAIDEN is a vile period drama from South Korea about a young Korean prostitute and pickpocket sent by a criminal to become the servant of a rich Japanese woman living with her perverted uncle so they can steal her inheritance. THE HANDMAIDEN ends up being a godless, pornographic, perverted, sexist, radical feminist, lesbian story depicting men as sado-masochistic monsters.
When the young prostitute arrives at the rich Japanese woman’s huge country mansion, she’s at first intimidated by the woman and her stern uncle. Slowly, the prostitute and the woman fall in lust with one another. Eventually, the movie reveals that the uncle is using the wife to read and perform vile stories from the horrendous sado-masochistic “literature” he collects, for both the uncle and his rich friends. The prostitute and the woman decide to turn the tables on the prostitute’s pimp, who’s using the prostitute to lure the woman to Japan, where he will marry her, then abandon her and take all her money by having her committed to an insane asylum.
Based on an equally lurid British novel, THE HANDMAIDEN is being heavily promoted as an artsy foreign movie worthy of awards. Instead, however, it’s really just a pornographic excuse for promoting a perverse, leftist, radical feminist, homosexual agenda. Needless to say, THE HANDMAIDEN is thoroughly abhorrent in practically every way. It’s a despicable use of fancy movie equipment.
