More Detail:
THE LAST SUPPER details the most important love story ever told as revealed in the Gospels of Jesus Christ. The movie shows us how “…God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Jesus goes up to Jerusalem to hand himself over to suffer, die, and rise from the dead. Jesus takes all our sins to the Cross and offers himself to God to pay for the offenses of the whole world. He promises all who believe and repent will have eternal life with Him. The movie depicts the torture and crucifixion of Jesus in some scenes of cruelty and violence. There are also several dark scary moments. Caution is recommended for older children.
THE LAST SUPPER is about the final days of the earthly life of Jesus Christ before His crucifixion. Told from the Apostle Peter’s perspective, Jesus travels to Jerusalem knowing He’s about to offer His life as a ransom for many. Riding on a donkey, Jesus arrives in Jerusalem to acclaim. He notices the money changers in the marketplace of Temple. Angered by the practices happening in His Father’s house, He flips tables and whips all in the vicinity with cords. The Apostles try to keep Him from being a target of the High Priests and Jewish officials representing God’s presence on earth at the time. Jesus shows no fear, however. He answers the High Priest, Caiaphas, truthfully as He calls God His Father.
Caiaphas and the priests decide Jesus must die. The plot to kill Jesus begins. Caiaphas manipulates Jesus’s weakest and most prideful Apostle, Judas, to help him.
At first Judas refuses to betray Jesus. Satan, in the form of a monster and a snake, convinces Judas that Jesus is going to die, and all of the Apostles will suffer and die as well. He coaxes Judas to save himself.
Meanwhile, Jesus makes arrangement for what will be known as The Last Supper, a celebration of the Jewish Passover with His Apostles.
As the betrayal of Judas reaches a crescendo, Jesus washes the feet of the Apostles before the Passover supper. Peter resists, claiming He will never let Jesus serve Him in such a way. However, Jesus informs Peter if He does not, he cannot be saved.
The events of the Last Supper and its aftermath, including Jesus establishing the New Covenant, proceed according to the Gospels.
THE LAST SUPPER tells the Gospel story in a powerfully picturesque manner. There are some striking moments which evoke the power of love, faith, and self-reflection. The suffering and death of Jesus is the most tragic event in human history. It is also the most important event in human history. Some significant moments of the life of Jesus feel rushed, while others, such as the demonic torment of Judas, are belabored. Creative license is used for story elements, and some dialogue is added to fill in the explanation for the Jewish traditions and rituals from the Old Testament performed by Jesus and the Apostles. However, the main story is preserved. Jesus lives, dies, and conquers death to rise again for all who believe in Him, and repent.
