THE SAINT OF FORT WASHINGTON is a dismal look at the urban world of homelessness seen through the eyes of the men who are drawn together in this slice-of-life drama. When Matthew has to leave his tenant building, he goes to the Fort Washington shelter where he comes to understand that every man inside the shelter is out only for himself and only the strongest and the smartest survive. He is befriended by Jerry who teaches him many valuable lessons about survival like how to get food and to stay in a warm place. Jerry also teaches him how to make a living by washing windows of cars that have stopped at corners. Soon, the two begin to save for a place to live together, and risking their lives and money each night, they return to the shelter.
This movie is not only hopelessly depressing in itself but is also a dismal portrayal of mankind as well. The spirit to overcome circumstances was crushed by one action. Although Jerry makes reference to God and even baptizes Matthew, the film, with its street rough language, brutal, meaningless violence, and poorly written message of bad overcoming the spiritually good, is contrary to the truth of Christ’s Gospel. Although Danny Glover and Matt Dillon are outstanding, THE SAINT OF FORT WASHINGTON is one of those films which neither one of these talented actor’s abilities can rescue.
